I don't know, I've never been to it, but 40 quid sounds a bit steep to see a wall. I'd imaging it would be ok to see it for free, and that 40 quid could just be a tour. I'm not sure.

Just going away for a few days, it's what I enjoy doing, this time it was a choice between Newcastle, Carlisle or Liverpool, my partner chose Carlisle

i live an hour away from carlisle, would recommend exploring the lake district, ambleside is a beautiful town, and possibly venture into dumfries and galloway, lots of lovely stuff to do down this neck of the woods, perhaps a bit of a drive though?
