Default How old you you have to be to work in Sainsbury\'s?

Just wondered how old you have to be to work in Sainsbury's. I heard it was 15 but i'm not sure. I'd like to do shelf stacking there.

You have to be 16 to work in Tesco so its probably the same for Sainsbury's.

If you look at the various websites that Sainsburys and Tescos have on the web, they should have a contact e-mail and you can ask them.

This is the restriction of hours for 15 year old under UK employment law.

Q. What are the limitations on the hours that a 15 and 16 year old (under the compulsory school age) can work?
A.

A 15 and 16 year old may not work:

* Before 7am or after 7pm on a school day;
* For more than 2 hours on a school day (this can either be 1 hour before and after school or 2 hours after school);
* For more than 12 hours in a school week;
* For more than 8 hours on a Saturday or a weekday during the school holidays;
* For more than 2 hours on any Sunday;
* For more than 35 hours in any week during the school holidays;
* For more than 4 hours in any day without a rest break of one hour.

A child must also have at least 2 consecutive non-school weeks without employment in any one year. That means every child is entitled to 2 weeks holiday a year.

Of course any employer may have their own rules over and above UK law.

Looking on their web site at there current jobs most of them are for 18+ and I can only see 2 for 16+. There is nothing below that age so it is not looking good.

Your best bet would be to ring your local store and ask to speak to the Personal Manager. They will know exactly what the score is.

I know of a girl who's definitely only 17 working at Sainsburys, but I'm really not sure beyond that.

Even if you analyse the law, some companies don't allow people of a certain age for insurance/safety reasons etc...
So it's hard to give a definitive answer without actually asking the supermarket themselves or finding it out on one of their websites etc.

If I had to make a guess, id say 16.
With perhaps the odd exception for 15yr olds wanting to work very low hours on minimum wage.
