Israel will "exact a price" from Iran in response to its attack on the country when the time is right, war cabinet minister Benny Gantz says.

In a statement released a short while ago - just before Israel's war cabinet convened - Gantz says: "We will build a regional coalition and exact the price from Iran in the fashion and timing that is right for us.

"And most importantly, faced with the desire of our enemies to harm us, we will continue to unite and become stronger."

Separately, Gantz says he has just finished speaking with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

"We discussed first and foremost the imperative of forming a global united front to counter emboldened Iranian aggression directly and through its proxies - regionally and globally," Gantz says in a social media post.

Iran's state TV repeatedly aired a video of a fire in Chile today, claiming that it was footage of missiles successfully hitting targets in Israel.

The clip, run several times during the live coverage of Iran's retaliatory attack, shows a motorway in the foreground while a huge fire turns the night sky red.

A woman can be heard speaking in Spanish while another subs.

The video was one of several clips to show Iranian missiles and drones successfully pass through Israel's air defence "minutes ago" and strike pre-designated targets, state TV reported.

But the footage is neither recent nor related to Iran's retaliatory attack against Israel.

i think this was iran's plan from the start, they want a regional conflict and there is such hatred in the region that it takes very little to light the fuse.

It's not even just the fact that there will likely be a regional war, the effect on the global economy will be absolutely massive, so countries that don't want to get involved will be dragged in across the globe. Honestly, i think it's inevitable or as close to inevitable as it could possibly be

Just to add, when America were attacked on home soil, they didn't hesitate to exact revenge, so Biden saying don't retaliate is laughable

I'd expect it from my govt. I imagine the Israel people are much the same. Nobody wants war at the end of the day, but when is the line drawn? They are being attacked by both terrorists and now Iran, an actual country. Israel has a right to self-defense and they would be in the wrong to do nothing for their people.

If they didn’t want Iran to retaliate they shouldn’t have bombed their embassy and killed their people, Israel are dropping bombs on multiple countries around them on a daily basis, they are not the victims no matter how hard they and the western media try to make them look like they are

"The victims" as always here isn't really something you can pin down (other than to say that any civilian life on any side caught in the crossfire is a victim) - the political situation in the Middle East has been a thunderdome for longer than living memory. It's very, very complex and has always been somewhat held together with duck tape and crazy glue.

But people be people and they like their heroes and villains, goodies and baddies... black and white... so to speak. Pointing out political complexity is seen as "fence sitting" - you have to pretend that everything is simple, neat and tied up with a pretty little ribbon, one way or the other, even though it doesn't and never will reflect the reality.

sometimes there is inevitability. This has been brewing for decades. In all my years, it's never been more on the brink than it is now.

It's all very well as an outsider saying cool heads must prevail. That's just not how humans behave, and like i said earlier, the USA were spoiling for a fight when they were attacked - think pearl harbour and the twin towers. No cool heads were on display there

IMO it's fairly obvious that he doesn't give a crap about anything but $$$ and the financial sector. Everything he does enthusiastically is in some way geared towards neoliberal economics, and as you say, everything else sounds like lip service that's been written by someone else and handed to him on a napkin.
