I've noticed there's only 2 films that aren't from America in this list. We should have at least Martyrs or High Tension in here. Something french.

Another snob, Trick r' Treat [2007]

Scream

10/10

This is my favourite movie ever? I'm not particularly big with movies and haven't seen that many but this is definitely my favourite one. From the (literally) iconic first scene to the genuinely shocking killer reveal and the action scenes tat follow, as well as all the suspense and death scenes in between (Tatum's death in particular stands out) it's just brilliant. I also adore the character of Billy and find him highly complex, which is nice as most films just have one dimensional villains that don't endear, something I find Billy to be. He's also hot.

Scream
8/10

Scream's obviously a classic, and for good reason. It rejuvenated the slasher genre and continues to inspire and influence horror to this day. On top of that, it combined the horror with elements of dark comedy much more effectively than others have managed to.

Another of it's most iconic elements is how self-referential it is. I love me some meta, and it's great to have the characters reference tropes that they themselves are (in some cases unknowingly) currently living through.

The closing moments of the first scene remains one of my favourite scenes from a horror movie, the haunting score playing over Casey Becker's final moments really strikes a chord.

As for the killer reveals, on one hand it slightly bothers me that the killers were two of the people heavily telegraphed as strong possibilities throughout the movie (as a big whodunit fan I always prefer a more shocking reveal, for someone believed to be one of the more benevolent characters to suddenly reveal their true colours), but on the other hand I think the double bluff works because it gets you to think "Well it can't be Billy since they're making it so obvious".

In a nutshell, I think Scream is a movie that can appeal to a wide-range of movie fans. It has the kills to satisfy the slasher fans, an engrossing mystery element for the whodunit lovers, and just a heap of scares, laughs and thrills to keep almost anyone entertained throughout.

Friday The 13th

A classic slasher about a mother who can't let the past go. Story follows Annie, the only likable character as she takes a trip to Camp Blood, aka, Camp Crystal Lake for her cook job. Within her journey she gets warning signs from locals to "turn back now." Being a horror film the cheerful one ignores them and hitches her way there. The silent driver gets out of hand and the adorable teenager is murdered. Sigh.

Cut to the rest of the camp counselors. You got your slut, jock, joker, creep, and girl trying to be innocent but she slept with the boss. One by one they become fish food, dying from brutal deaths. But Kevin Bacon's death tho >>>. Alice being the only one kickin' runs into Pamela. "An old friend of the Christies" the owners of the camp. She soon reveals her eye sore son Jason had drown here, thanks to counselors who didn't pay attention. In her power she's taking revenge and offing everyone involve in the reopening of Camp Crystal Lake.

A game of hide and seek begins but of course Alice runs into the bodies of all her dead friends. "Kill her, mommy! Kill her!" Pamela channeling crazy bitch realness as the final battle happens. Hit here, hit there. They make their way to the lake, Machete in Pamela's hand. Alice overpowering the elder she managed to take the blade and BAM! Mrs. Voorhees became headless, damage is done, the wicked witch is dead. Lord only knows why but Alice takes to the lake overnight and wakes up to an angry child taking her under. (maybe the best jump scare of all time.) surviving she wakes up in the hospital asking about the whereabouts of Jason. Clueless cops saying they didn't find a boy but she and we know that he's still there.

It's an iconic horror film and you have to appreciate it for what it is. It's a fun time when you're with others drinking. To me, the series starts to get better once Jason takes the reins. The first couple entries that is.

7/10

Friday the 13th (1980)

The film concerns a group of teenagers who are murdered one by one while attempting to re-open an abandoned campground, and stars Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Kevin Bacon, Jeannine Taylor, Mark Nelson and Robbi Morgan. It is considered one of the first "true" slasher movies.

Remember to have your reviews in for 8PM tonight!

Scream (1996)

10/10

One of my favourite movies of all time - I love the plot, setting, twists and of course the characters. Sidney Prescott is one of the most layered and likeable protagonist/final girl I think slasher films have to offer. Tatum (played by TiBB favourite Rose) and Billy (played by TiBB sex symbol Skeet) are also amazing characters with likeable (in Tatum's case) and complex (in Billy's case) characteristics which makes them feel much more than standard slasher characters which usually don't have much depth than 'the slut', 'the bitch', 'the virgin', 'the nerd', 'the jock' ect.

I think the most likeable quality about Scream is the fact it's so self aware and it doesn't take itself too seriously - yet you don't feel like you're wasting your time on trash because it has an amazing story to it. I like the backstory of Maureen Prescott also (although it's touched upon more in other films) and I think it's more relevant in this film than it is in say, Halloween. Scream is a film that deserves nothing but praise and it thoroughly deserves the 10/10 I have awarded it.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Rating - 8/10

I have not seen this movie in years so it's great to give this another watch to refresh my memory.I thought Annie was going to be the survivor, she was the only likeable and fun character so it was a bit sad when we saw her die. The only problem with this film was we didn't see everyones deaths fully but I found it smart we saw the killer in their view. Of course my favourite death scene on this movie was Jacks!! Jason's mother speaking like Jason was really creepy but amazing! I find this franchise amazing in general so im really looking forward to the 2nd one.

Friday the 13th

It's a very boring film that's completely derivative of Halloween. I don't find the lore interesting, the characters were unlikable cutouts that were there to be killed and I think the film lacked the sense of fun that slashers need to succeed. Very bland.

I was just watching it and thinking 'why am I not watching Halloween instead?'

You know a film is bad when the afterthought remake is better than the original.

Friday the 13th (1980)
7/10

Friday the 13th kick started the early 80's slasher film phenomenon that was ignited by Halloween (1978). The film centers around a summer camp called Camp Crystal Lake, which has re-opened for the first time since 1957, after a drowning had taken place there previously. A group of teenagers are working as camp counselors for the re-opened holiday camp only to find themselves at mercy to an unknown assailant picking them off one by one.

It's a decent film in itself - can be quite dull at times. But it's pretty much your typical vintage slasher flick. The 2nd one is much better imo.
