It had to happen. Since the smoking ban came into force, nicotine-addicted Rovers regulars haven't had a place to call their own.

That's all going to change, as Vernon is going to build a smoking shelter in the back yard. Not that Vernon's addicted to the evil weed himself - it seems more like a way to scam some money out of Liz, as the shelter is built by Vernon and his mate Don. Vernon plans to somehow "knock through," so customers can get into the yard without having to go behind the bar and through the residential part of the pub. The Tardis-like properties of this hostelry never cease to amaze.

A "source" told the Daily Star: "The smoking shelter will be a new location for film crews. Lots of storylines will be played out while the Street’s characters enjoy a cigarette or two. Viewers will see a couple of characters getting carried away as they gossip when they’re puffing away on their fags. But it won’t be long before someone blunders in from the bar and chances across a conversation they shouldn’t hear – causing sparks to fly.”

I always thought those back yards in Coronation Street had magical soundproof properties, but apparently not.
