i still can't fathom how the EU think they can blame AZ when they first said it wasn't suitable for the over 65's and then stopped it's use over safety concerns

It's also notable that the netherlands and belgium both vetoed the export ban that the EU wanted to implement, and they are the countries with the AZ manufacturing plants

Netherlands goes along with EU vaccination approach

''EU leaders were also unhappy with calls by Austria for a bigger share of the EU jabs. ‘At this moment it is difficult to conclude that Austria has an issue now,’ Rutte said after the meeting.''

''Commission president Ursula von der Leyen told the meeting that the EU is on track to vaccinate 70% of its adult population by the summer. Some 88 million vaccine doses have been delivered to the EU so far and 62 million have been administered, she said.''

And now will give it to over 55s only (France)

Way before that really. Had been floating about for absolutely ages before anyone clicked on that it was 'a thing'. Fairly sure the horse had bolted before we even woke up.

Definitely agree with this. Once deaths and hospitalisations are very low..switching back to 'infection rate' to make it seem worse.. is nothing but scaremongering to me at this stage. Infections rates hardly matter if a 'bad' infection is rare really. Would be kind of like tracking/publicizing the number of people with noro, because 1/5000 people could potentially get very very ill from it :S

Its just the schools returning and massive testing protocols starting. I don't take much notice of cases, its hospital admittance and ICU patients that matter now and those numbers are dropping rapidly

6000+ may sound good to some given how many new infections we WERE getting BUT it’s still over 2 MILLION new infections per year ..

Thumbs up A sober examination of the Covid data reveals there's no reason to panic

The rate being stable, as it has been, may mean that schools returning has so far added
around ten per cent to daily case numbers. Or perhaps instead the effects of people
drifting back to the office and going to see families post-vaccination are increasing. It is
unclear. Case numbers are now vastly lower than they were in early January and
continue to drift further down. As the weather warms up and as the effects of ever-more
vaccinations kick in, that rate of decline is likely to accelerate. The relaxations of 29
March and Step 2 on 12 April will doubtless each see some impact on R.

But with around 60 per cent of us now having some protection, via vaccination or past
infection, there is only much more modest scope for the virus to spread. Should the
current wave on the Continent produce some unexpected vaccine escape variant,
things may change. But as things stand in the UK, cases are still contracting and there
is as yet nothing in the data to suggest they will not continue to do so.

We will have to see the effect these rises of cases have on hospital admittance/ICU patients over the next few weeks, hopefully they will be lower with the vaccine

I'm hoping that a lot will be asymptomatic or mild cases on the groups who have yet to be vaccinated and those who the virus is usually not as dangerous
