i think its very rare for a LF test to show a false positive, so its not exactly a toss of a coin. With vaccination, a person could be infected, but not enough to trigger a positive test (low viral load), which would mean they wouldnt be infectious either, so the tests are very useful

there are no reasons to have border restrictions when an infection is already in the majority in the county. Its only useful right at the very start, and even that is highly debatable

All that means is that nearly 400 MPs think it's perfectly fine and logical to sack 60,000+ NHS staff.

Get ready for a real pandemic.

You need hospital treatment? Fook you, we ain't got the staff. You can just suffer or die instead.

Those 60,000+ NHS staff may as well quit now in the middle of winter, I'm sure many of them will. Why wait until April? Just leave now and find other employment.

So a South African GP just said on Sky News that Omicron has 30+ mutations yet we’re being told it has 50+ mutations .

Quite a difference

with over 100 tory mp's voting against further restrictions last night, Boris has basically been warned that they wont accept any more. If he tries to impose further restrictions next week, I can see him being removed as leader

Staff absences due to Covid meant our year 9 pupils were all working from home yesterday ( they probably didn’t ) ... today it’s year 10 students working at home ( they probably won’t ) .

They will all be set work via Google Classroom but there will be no LIVE teaching as there simply isn’t enough staff to monitor them so they will basically having a jolly apart from the minority.

To be fair that doesn’t mean it will happen or is even a strong possibility - they just don’t want to be caught unprepared if it was to happen.

Schools around here are finishing for Christmas early on Friday and “learning from home” for the final few days next week (not that any kids are going to do any work on a week off right before Christmas).

All in the hope an extra few days out of the classroom/school environment can help suppress cases.

https://nltimes.nl/2021/12/14/rutte-...xtend-lockdown

Rutte: can't ignore covid omicron variant, must close schools, extend lockdown

The Cabinet confirmed its decision to close primary schools one week before the winter vacation, and extend the evening lockdown by one month. Additionally, after school care must also close from Friday, but will be allowed to reopen during the holiday period. That should mean that the childcare centers can reopen from December 27, and schools reopen on January 10.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the it a “setback,” but said it should not come as a surprise. He and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said the decision was largely made out of concern for the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Rutte said that it appeared as if the Netherlands has gone beyond the peak of the current coronavirus wave, but the number of infections is still high, over 300 new Covid-19 patients are still admitted to hospitals daily, and the hospitals still have a high number of Covid-19 patients in active treatment.

At the same time, concern over the Omicron variant led De Jonge to announce an ambitious and rapid scaling up of the Covid-19 booster shot campaign. The Netherlands was among the last in the European Union to start with boosters, and the country sits near the bottom for boosters given, even as it reached 1 million jabs last week. As of today, everyone over 60 is now able to make an appointment for a booster. The goal is to expand that to all residents over 45 by the end of next week, and all adults by mid-January. The booster jab can be administered to anyone who received their last vaccine dose at least three months ago, instead of six.

"Worrying does not help combat the virus. Vaccination does. If you have not yet been vaccinated, the Omicron variant is the reason to rethink vaccination,” De Jonge said.
