We can all speculate until the cows come home on the nature of the cropping/editing of the photo, and on the reasons for it, it's all just guesswork BUT trying to claim that it "isn't edited" at this point requires blinkers so thick you might as well be certified blind. Also even if it is her real hand, and even if she does just sometimes not wear her ring, releasing a picture of an extremely famous family minus wedding ring when there's current rumours regarding the husbands fidelity would be an absolutely massive PR fck up.

Possibly they took burst shots and merged portions where that person had a slightly more ideal pose or expression. Very common in professional photography. I think we saw evidence of this before in their past family shots. Seeing as people clearly overanalyze their photos, they care very much what impression it leaves.. so it is a little bit less about the tricks involved because as we know these shots are typically creatively adjusted. Edit: For me it always seemed about capturing their family charm, maybe not capturing the "perfect" well-behaved family.. because it is not like kids sit still for photos.

It could also be a Patch tool and Clone brush either not checked against every edge to be sure it is seamless. Maybe a simpler error in cleaning up ugly folds or seams. (I haven't looked that closely, I have a headcold)

They're royals, celebrities, whatever... They're going to do fussy things to their images. One of the US mags did the weird head/body replacement thing (I forget which) on Harry that one photoshoot for a magazine where he was standing with Meghan. That one was really obvious, but you would be surprised people don't notice because these are done so often in the US in magazine covers. They usually just look like they have a stiff neck posture with an OTT facial expression, but something feels off..

So it is very common to pull portions of shots from the same shoot and replace elements in the final. Including an entire person's head because they had a better expression in the other one. Sometimes it looks fine. Other times it looks like the person is Frankensteined. But many people in Hollywood like to brush themselves up and Frankenstein their looks, so it usually just looks on brand and the average person won't notice..

Literally, the photo probably has been touched up to make her look as good as can be, I think its unlikely there was a stand in unless it was someone very close to children, when you think what Kate has been through in the last couple of years its no wonder she is taking time out, she was very close to Philip and Liz, she was very close to Harry who is now happy to throw her under a bus, she doesn't know what they are going to come out with next and has been accused of being a racist and a bully, does a bully go round with flowers to apologise...not known that before... she is a human, not a robot and might be struggling to process everything that has happened in the last few years, if she had had a hysterectomy then that can also affect women badly as any future childbearing is snatched away, and finally IF William has played away that is for them to work out ....this ghoulish appetite to know what is going on is very weird.... they are not doing interviews or books or netflix series they want to deal with whatever is going on in private and they should be left to it...not much more to say
