Coronation Street producers are to introduce the soap's first ever lesbian character.
Bosses had originally intended barmaid Violet Wilson – played by Jenny Platt before she left the Manchester-based soap earlier this year – to be gay when she joined in 2004. However, her romances with on and off screen love Jamie Baldwin (Rupert Hill) and Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) proved popular with viewers. A Weatherfield source told the News Of The World: "Executives want to create a soap which is representative of society in 2008 and they are acutely aware they need more gay characters. "Violet was pinpointed as the one character they could take down that route but they went cold on the idea and cast her as straight." The insider added: "It does seem ridiculous it has never been explored on Corrie but that's all about to change." |

As the booze cruisers head home it is clear that Janice (Vicky Entwistle) and Roger (Andrew Dunn) are in high spirits but for Audrey (Sue Nicholls) it has been an endurance test. With Bill (Peter Armitage) at the wheel she continues to find fault in everything and things go from bad to worse when they get a puncture. As they wait for the recovery van Audrey starts to wonder where her relationship with Bill is really heading. Fed up with her long face he joins Janice and Roger and they crack open a few cans leaving Audrey the only one able to drive home. But disaster strikes when, during another argument, Audrey takes her eye off the road.
Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) is feeling on top of the world after his night with Nina and when Prem's accountant turns up he is happy to take her for a drink but it is clear to her that he is keeping his distance. Norris (Malcolm Hebdon) is intrigued when she leaves the pub and Dev doesn’t seem to be affected by her rejection. David (Jack P Shepherd) confides in Darryl (Johnny Dixon) that he is worried that Tina (Michelle Keegan) is emailing someone all the time and confesses that he has been trying passwords to hack into her email but with no luck. Later though David strikes gold when he finds her password in her address book. Darryl tries to warn him against spying on her but David is too curious and too jealous to take his friend's advice - what will he find? Elsewhere Clarissa (Alexandra Boyd) continues to rub Liz's (Beverly Callard) nose in it by ordering champagne to celebrate her and Harry's 'non-divorce'. This episode is written by Martin Sterling and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones. The producer is Kim Crowther. **** PI for the rest of the week follows: Monday 4 August 8.30pm The booze cruise gang are in shock in the smashed up people carrier. Janice (Vicky Entwistle) calls for an ambulance and it appears that Audrey (Sue Nicholls) is the most badly injured. She's taken to hospital where they are met by a worried Gail (Helen Worth) and Ted (Michael Byrne). Gail offers to look after her mum once she is released from hospital but Audrey insists she is fine with Bill (Peter Armitage). Once home however it is clear that she is anything but fine and she tells Bill that the weekend was a disaster and she no longer thinks they have anything in common - is this the end of Audrey and Bill? David (Jack P Shepherd) is thrilled when he reads Tina's (Michelle Keegan) outbox and discovers that she has been talking about him in glowing terms to her ex-boyfriend. Disappointed to read that she wishes he was more spontaneous he decides to use the insider information to his advantage and become the perfect boyfriend. Will his plan succeed? Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) and Nina (Harvey Virdi) have been for a spin in her sports car and Dev introduces her to Amber (Nikki Patel) as a famous film star - clearly still impressed by her faded Bollywood past. Norris is beside himself with this juicy bit of gossip but Amber is less than impressed and lets her dad know in no uncertain terms what she thinks of his behaviour. Clarissa (Alexandra Boyd) is looking forward to winding Liz (Beverly Callard) up and arrives in the Rovers with a romantic card for Harry (Jack Ellis) but the wind is taken out of her sails when Harry tells her that he doesn't want to rush into getting back together. Elsewhere Jerry (Michael Starke) is flat hunting for Teresa (Karen Henthorne) but is she ready to leave? This episode is written by Jayne Hollinson and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones. The producer is Kim Crowther. **** Wednesday 6 August 7.30pm Jerry (Michael Starke) is with a reluctant Teresa (Karen Henthorne) trying to find a suitable flat for her to move into. He's convinced her reluctance is because she is frightened of being on her own so he suggests a flat belonging to mate of his. She tries to argue the toss with him but he persuades her to view the flat but she's hurt when she overhears a conversation between Jerry and Darryl (Johnny Dixon) about her moving out. Later when she is cooking dinner she decides on a drastic plan of action and taking one of Jerry's pills she grinds it into his evening meal - will he notice? Gail (Helen Worth) is surprised to hear that Audrey (Sue Nicholls) has thrown Bill (Peter Armitage) out but Ted (Michael Byrne) agrees to stay with Audrey to keep her company. Bill however is not willing to give in so easily and tells Janice that he wants Audrey back. Later as Audrey and Ted relax in each other's company Audrey confides in him that she is looking for a soulmate and Bill isn't it. David (Jack P Shepherd) is continuing with his plan to be the perfect boyfriend and buys Tina (Michelle Keegan) some gig tickets for a band that she mentioned in her emails but Darryl (Johnny Dixon) thinks he may have gone too far. Kevin is furious that he can't get onto his forecourt because a truck is parked outside Underworld. He's even more angry when Rosie comes out to explain and he accuses her of doing Tony's dirty work. Meanwhile Tony continues to play Sally off against Kevin. Elsewhere Dev is starting to feel like the ball in Prem and Nina's game of marital ping pong. This episode is written by Jan McVerry and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones. The producer is Kim Crowther. **** Friday 8 August 7.30pm Tina (Michelle Keegan) is thrilled that David (Jack P Shepherd) has got tickets for them to go and see her favourite band and is delighted when Jerry (Michael Starke) lets her leave work early. But things start to go wrong when she is chatting to Darryl (Johnny Dixon) and something he says sets alarm bells ringing. Not the sharpest tool in the box he digs an even deeper hole for himself and David when he tries to backtrack. The damage is done and she accuses him of hacking into her emails - how will she react when he tells her it was David not him? Kevin (Michael Le Vell) is still refusing to discuss Tony's (Gray O'Brien) offer and Sally (Sally Whittaker) is increasingly worried about their financial situation. Even Rosie (Helen Flanagan) is starting to be secretly worried about how her actions have affected her family. Meanwhile Tony continues with his plan for Weatherfield domination and tries to put the frighteners on an elderly resident who is delaying Tony's latest development by refusing to move out of his home. Ken (William Roache) has become increasingly engrossed in writing his novel much to Blanche (Maggie Jones) and Deirdre's irritation. When Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) tries to tidy the house Ken gets annoyed and decamps to the library. In his absence Blanche can't stop herself from sneaking a peak at the manuscript. Teresa (Karen Henthorne) is still enjoying being at number six and is still showing little sign of wanting to move out. Worried about the tablets she put into his food she carefully quizzes Gail (Helen Worth) about the risk of Jerry (Michael Starke) overdosing on his medication. What is she planning? This episode is written by Lucy Gannon and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones. The producer is Kim Crowther. **** Friday 8 August 8.30pm A furious Tina (Michelle Keegan) heads home to confront David (Jack P Shepherd) as Darryl (Johnny Dixon) desperately tries to contact his mate to warn him about what is heading his way. After a series of near misses Darryl eventually gets to David before Tina but it is too late to save the relationship - Tina is furious with David and packs her bags. She refuses to listen to his reasons and accuses him of trying to control her before storming out leaving him to wonder if he has really blown it this time. Ken (William Roache) is in a panic - unaware that Blanche (Maggie Jones) has hidden some pages of his manuscript he is worried that they have been thrown out with the rubbish. He insults Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) about her reading matter as he looks through the recycling bin. But she's even more hurt when Blanche fills her in on some of the content of the novel. Ted (Michael Byrne) suggests to Bill (Peter Armitage) that he should be more proactive in his bid to win back Audrey (Sue Nicholls). Bill takes his advice and arrives with flowers and tickets for the opera. But Audrey is not sure that she wants to give it another try with Bill and gives him back the flowers. Carla (Alison King) wants Rosie (Helen Flanagan) to look after her interests as she is going away. She slips a roll of notes into her hand and advises Tony (Gray O'Brien) not to misjudge Rosie or underestimate her potential to cause trouble. This episode is written by David Lane and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones. The producer is Kim Crowther. |

LOVE rat John Stape faces jail after being framed for child abuse by cheeky Chesney Battersby-Brown.
Ches wrongly accuses the disgraced former teacher of battering him and giving him a bloody nose. It is all part of the teenager’s campaign to stop smarmy Stape (Graeme Hawley, 33) rekindling a romance with his sister Fiz. Fuming Fiz (Jennie McAlpine, 23) confronts her ex, bellowing at him: “If you want a fight, pick on someone your own size.” Then she belts him in the face and threatens him with the police. Even mechanic Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell, 43) threatens to beat him up again. He has hated Stape since learning he bedded his daughter Rosie (Helen Flanagan, 18). But in the end it is Fiz who looks a fool when she discovers Chesney has made up the accusation. She learns it was Stape who rescued Chesney after he lost out in a fight over girlfriend Kayleigh Morton (Jessica Barton, 15). And Chesney’s lies backfire on him big time when Fiz apologises to Stape for the misunderstanding and the couple embrace. A source revealed last night “The lies act as the catalyst for Fiz and John getting back together. “Fiz feels stupid for believing he was guilty, and offers to buy him a drink to make up for it. One thing leads to another, the past is forgotten and they share an intimate kiss.” |

From Corrie's Sun City special
(The Sun) ![]() CORRIE battleaxe Cilla Battersby-Brown looks a bit shady as she plots a scam in a DVD special. The slummy mummy — who left the soap in October — has invited her family to her new home in Sun City, South Africa. Fiz, Chesney and Kirk are going out to help Cilla (Wendi Peters) win a “perfect family” contest — and a huge windfall. And the matriarch certainly has her eyes on the prize. As well as pretending to need a wheelchair she forces daughter Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) to dress up as a nun!
