Head of household (HoH) - the winner of this is immune and decides the two players that face elimination.

Power of Veto (PoV) - the winner of this can swap one of the nominated players for somebody else if they wish to. How they use this is up to them, they may use it strategically or to save themselves if they are nominated. HoH may also win the PoV challenge.

The HoH decides the nominees, the rest of the players decide who goes by voting individually.

So basically although you don;t have to participate, it benefits you if you do to try and save yourselves and have a bit of control over the game.
