removing swift will cripple russia, but that will be a last resort sanction because it has the potential to escalate the conflict out of control

what was Russia then supposed to do, allow Zelensky to march into those regions and who knows how many deaths would've come from that

Biden just shut up i really can't hear another word from him anymore

the only ones who will make this escalate out of control are the US, UK, and the stupid NATO and the morons over at the EU

Russia hasn't invaded Zelensky's ukrainian territory, just the pro-russian regions, and since they are pro russia Putin has full rights to defend those regions when necessary, and since Zelensky has been so eager of wanting to take Donetsk, Lugansk (since some citizens were already fleeing into russia) well we cannot allow people's homes to get destroyed over there

but yeah Putin is the villain, always has been in the eyes of the west (so i am not surprised at all with all this finger pointing with their so called evidence)

like omg panzers are in those regions umm lol of course to make a decent line of defence, hard to penetrate by western forces

as if Putin wants to go to war

Get your facts right Nicky. Those areas are part of Ukraine sovereign territory. Agreed and signed up to by putin in 2014. At that time he made a binding commitment not to interfere in those regions

Does make you wonder how long all of this has been rumbling and how many recent global events are connected, though.

The reason they won't impose sanctions on SWIFT are that Russian oil and gas are critical to the economic function of Europe. However, as pointed out the other day, the UK itself is far less reliant on Russian natural resources than other European nations.

And "conveniently" ... the UK recently left the EU, putting up a massive wall of economic protection between ourselves and the EU We would obviously still be hugely affected, but FAR less than if we were still one of the EU lynch pins.

there is so much complexity in it. Going back to Tony Blairs labour, he welcomed the dodgy wealthy russians into the country and the tories just continued it. From that point forward, politicians actions and agenda has been compromised

The other thing with sanctions is timing. Blasting a load of sanctions won't stop him invading, but ukraine is unlikely to be like the afghan collapse. It's going to be a long bloody war. As the body bags mount up returning to russia, applying sanctions at that point can be much more effective

You can't really say it's not an invasion "because the people there are Russian loyalists" ... that would be like Catalonia in Spain inviting a foreign nation to set up base in Barcelona and declare that it's "not an invasion of Spain" because "Catalonia is 80%+ separatist".

One For Alf:

[If properly handled, there was absolutely

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday
sent troops into the pro-Russian regions of
Luhansk and Donetsk as he declared those
regions independent
Biden imposed some new sanctions
on Monday prohibiting trade with the
Kremlin-backed regions
The president is expected to announced more
sanctions Tuesday
Republicans and Democrats urged Biden to use
every sanction in his arsenal
before Putin fully invades]

The Crimean War ffs! Britain was still an Empire and we were practically using muskets! What next? Italy piping up "We're coming to conquer Britain! We did it in 43AD and we can do it again!"

Since the begining the west and especially Boris have used inflammatory words when describing their sanctions..

Boris was on about "first bombardment of sanctions" just the other day.

Hes been described as churchill like in the past, I'm sure hes wetting his pants at the thought of using words like, volley, and salvo, in the future.
