Yeah, and he didn't use the name "The Doctor" because that is a promise to save people and he didn't, he killed. It's why he isn't spoken about, the Doctor is too ashamed of his past self. Matt Smith technically is #12.

John Hurt is like the "unspoken of" Doctor that existed between Paul McGann (8) and Christopher Eccleston (9) and was the Doctor that took part in the time war but he didn't go as the name "the Doctor" because he was a killer (it was a war) and the Doctor is ashamed of his former self and is why he's been wiped from memory. Something along those lines, we'll find out in November the exact details.

No the name they wanted to know was The Doctor's true name (i.e.. the name he was born with). It was that name which opened his tomb, and gave the Great Intelligence access to the Doctor's timestream.

The Doctor was a title he gave himself because it's a name that means to do good and save people etc.

John Hurt's doctor wasn't one of the faces Clara saw because he somehow locked him away because he broke the promise that the name "Doctor" was supposed to signify. So either, he was the Doctor who fought in the Time War and committed mass genocide or as another poster suggested McGann fought in the war, resulting in a regeneration into Hurt who then (out of being born into war) did something terrible that the Doctor wants to block out.

So, effectively his "greatest secret revealed" wasn't his name like everyone thought but this missing Doctor in the form of John Hurt.

That's my understanding anyway.

Clara ruins DR Who more than anything else for me. I can't take to her at all.

Just realised I haven't commented in here on TNOD (or I think the lat few episodes), loved The Crimson Horror, thought Nightmare In Silver was **** (but like the changes they'd done to the Cybermen, particularly their new adaptability), and really loved The Name Of The Doctor.

50th Anniversary pictures!

Spoiler:

MATT SMITH, DAVID TENNANT AND JOHN HURT TO FACE OFF AGAINST DALEKS IN 50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

The Doctors, Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt will battle the deadly Daleks, the BBC announces today, in the show’s 50th anniversary special.

Returning to BBC One on 23 November the highly anticipated adventure will star: Matt Smith; Jenna Coleman; David Tennant; Billie Piper; John Hurt and Joanna Page. In a surprise twist in the recent series finale it was revealed John Hurt would be playing a Doctor, alongside Smith and Tennant.

The Daleks are the second monster to be announced for the 50th and will join the shape shifting Zygons, which have only appeared in the show once before in 1975. The Daleks were one of the first monsters to terrify audiences in 1963, 50 years ago, cementing their place in British popular culture.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, said:

“The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it’s fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.”

The 50th anniversary episode was shot earlier this year at BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff and across South Wales. Filming also took place in iconic London locations the Tower of London and Trafalgar Square for a huge stunt, which saw Matt Smith dangling from a TARDIS alongside Nelson’s Column.

So it sounds that Peter guy is likely gonna be the Doctor, would be interesting having an older actor in the role.

Yeah, I'm expecting another young charming guy or a Robert Downey Jr or Johnny Depp type actor.

BBC News have revealed the title and length of the 50th anniversary special.

Note: the original article has been now been deleted (another blunder?) but the preserved text is below:

Quote:
The BBC has announced a raft of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who.

A 75-minute special called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Smith said: “Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way.”

Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss.

The one-off programme stars David Bradley, of the Harry Potter films, as William Hartnell – who was the first Doctor in 1963.

BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama.

A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?” – using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer – while BBC Three will be home to several commissions.

The anniversary episode sees the return of the Daleks For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.

Danny Cohen, Director BBC Television said: “It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.

“I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”

Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year’s Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who said: “50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”
The Day of the Doctor!
