5. Memento (2000)
"Memory can change the shape of a room; it can change the color of a car. And memories can be distorted. They're just an interpretation, they're not a record, and they're irrelevant if you have the facts."

I think Memento is the best of all of Christopher Nolan's films - although they're all amazing. The non-linear structure, the acting, everything about the story forces you to pay attention to the movie and try to unravel the mystery of what the hell is going on.

4. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
"Memory can change the shape of a room; it can change the color of a car. And memories can be distorted. They're just an interpretation, they're not a record, and they're irrelevant if you have the facts."

This film is always advertised as a "fairy tale for adults"...and that it is. It's magical although maintaining seriousness, it's whimsical from a child's point of view but shows the real-world effects. You need to watch this film.

3. City of God (2002)
"What should have been swift revenge turned into an all out war. The City of God was divided. You couldn't go from one section the other, not even to visit a relative. The cops considered anyone living in the slum a hoodlum."

Being honest, I didn't expect much when I sat down to watch this film. I knew vaguely about it, but I didn't realize what a rollercoaster it'd be. Love, war, betrayal, everything about it makes it Brazil's finest film. Any of these in the top 25 are must-see films from me.

2. Amelie (2001)
"Amélie still seeks solitude. She amuses herself with silly questions about the world below, such as "How many people are having an orgasm right now?""

The garden gnome, the vivid colors, Ameile's helpful and cute personality. I could watch this film a million times over. It's a feel-good, beautiful film with a lively protagonist that only Audrey Tautou could portray.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (
"I could die right now, Clem. I'm just... happy. I've never felt that before. I'm just exactly where I want to be. "

This is my all-time favorite film. The soundtrack by Jon Brion, the colors, the emotion, the trippyness are all reasons why I love it (I do realize I've made a few lists). I can't count the number of times that I've seen this movie since it was released in theaters. In the end, it shows you that no matter how bad you were hurt, what pain you were put through, it all made you stronger in some way. The memories of love, the moments where the cracks started to show, and realizing that the love was still important to you, even if it was gone. Ah, brilliant film.
------------------
So, that's it! Here is the list in full.
1. Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004)
2. Amelie (2001)
3. City of God (2002)
4. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

6. Requiem For a Dream (2000)

Ah great list, I love Battle Royale and Kill Bill. I'm surprised about how many I've seen really, I'll be eagerly awaiting the top 5.

EDIT: Didn't see the second page I love Eternal Sunshine and Pan's Labyrinth but I'm not sure if I've seen the others although I've heard of them.

Finally got round to reading it Rory , I haven't seen quite a few of the films on your list, but I did notice a tendency for psychological thrillers! This has made me want to go watch quite a few of them; particularly Mulholland Drive, The Machinist and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!

David Lynch <3

I'm in the mood to watch Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, and The Machinist really. Darren Aronofsky (I think?, the director of Requiem for a Dream) has a film called "Following" that I'm watching atm. It's filed under "Dark + Mind-bending + Psychological" on my Netflix haha.

I actually haven't seen either of those, so I'm not one to judge! Both I've heard really good things about, though - just these were my favourites of the decade that I've seen
