Giving some scabby beggar 60p to use a phone... he then went to ask other people... he didn't want to use a phone. I always feel mean not giving to beggars excuses like 'I need a train ticket' incase they actually do.

I dont give beggars money. If I have anything spare I'll buy them food instead. As 9 times out of ten, give them cash and they are straight down the off license buying cider. Or saving all the change for drugs.
