Channel 5′s digital director, James Tatam has told NewMediaAge that Channel 5 Big Brother live feed will not be returning to the channel or online for this years CBB or BB.
Channel 5 are working with Facebook, Endemol and a mobile developer to make a facebook app for the show which allows online voting for the contestants via Facebook credits. In addition to the Facebook voting, the live feed has been pushed aside to make room for other social media opportunities. The show will feature real-time news and video updates from the house as well as video highlights. He said the following : “We want a lot of the content to be on Facebook. Putting real-time news and video updates alongside the ability to vote should be really powerful”. Facebook will not be the only integration and voting platform. Channel 5 will be launching smartphone apps and possibly looking to expand on what can be done on YouTube. He stated : “We want to use the capabilities of the smartphone platforms we’ll be on, so if that includes in-app purchasing we’ll use that,” he also has not ruled out using SMS (text) voting for the show however, there are strict regulations. “It’s only worth having SMS if there isn’t a better alternative on mobile. We can’t use SMS straight from screen because the regulators don’t permit it, there have been too many problems with latency and lag. So we’d only use it to purchase SMS voting bundles that enable real-time votes via mobile or online apps.” He wants to bring the most social media integration to the show as is possible as he believes “It has become clear over the last year that social media sits side by side with watching TV, more so than traditional websites ever have.” Channel 5 will be announcing more on this during this month with press releases on the way soon enough. |

Seems like they don't want to gamble, and they want to see how it pans out. Also, they want to save money and want to make a good profit.
