That's a fascinating debate, in my opinion. I understand where Katie is coming from, although I do not necessarily agree with her. I, personally judge people by there names. However, my motivations are quite different from Katie's. For me, it isn't a question about social class in any way, it's merely a question of past experiences i've had with people of a certain given name. For example, i've known two Sylvia's who have been very catty and unlikeable as well as Sylvia from BB9 who was absolutely attrocious. As a result, I'm always incredibly apprehensive about getting to know people called 'Sylvia'. If I had a child, however, i'm not sure I would let my beliefs influence my child/children. Sure, I have the decision to never call them Sylvia, but god forbid they became best friends with a Sylvia, I most certainly wouldn't prevent them from being able to hang out with that child. In some bizarre spiritual way I also believe that Sylvias are perhaps not compatible with Raphaels, whereas if my daughter was called Imogen, per say, the clash would no longer be there.
Another point I find interesting is the harping on about the name 'Tyler'. I, myself, come from a upper class, arguably 'snobby' background. That being said, there have been numerous 'Tylers' in my school, from the same sort of socio-economic background. What confuses me is how Katie Hopkins can classify a whole name as a socio-economic group, because surely, as i've experienced, and just logically can say, not every Tyler is going to be from a less fortunate socio-economic background. A final question that I might like to raise is what we think of more ethnically popular names such as 'La'quisha' or 'MyAsia' for African-American girls or, 'Habib' or 'Mohamed' for Muslims etc. To me, although of course it would raise to much controversy on a happy daytime show like 'This Morning', a question regarding names of this nature would be far more interesting and spark up a lot of opinions. Do you think of a sassy argumentative girl when you hear 'La'quisha' or do you think of a terrorist when you hear the name 'Mohamed'? This is not to say that I do, of course but it is something worth considering, in my opinion.

She's an awful person, she was on this morning the other month, and judging people for having tattoos, but judging anyone because of a name is just beyond stupid.

I agree but she fails to make the point. Her reasons for judging people are simply so she can be a snob and turn her nose up at them. As Barker has said, certain names do portray a certain image and I feel it is natural to see a certain name and to have an image of that person before you meet them but to stop your kids playing with someone cuz of their name is nothing more than snobbery. Katie never thinks that maybe her children could learn something from other kids she only happy for her kids to play with other kids that she has personally vetted. Its extremely narrow minded to think that kids with names like Tyler are not suitable to play with her kids.

There is a point to be made in there somewhere about making judgement on some of the more outlandish names. Such as, I think we would all make a presumption about families with the names Mercedes, Destiny or Precious or something equally ridiculous.
But she fails to make any such point and instead proves herself to be a snob. Halfway through the interview she showed what she really is when she admitted she determines someone's class from their name and wouldn't allow her children to mix with those from lower classes because they're automatically worse behaved, never do well in school etc. She's a very narrow minded, self obsessed, attention seeking bigot. The fact her daughter is named India when she claims to hate geographical names proves she's desperate to cause a bit of controversy. Can anyone be that stupid? I love her face when Holly tells her to stop right there. |

She must be on a wind up though. One of her tweets reads that "Stanley" is involved with knife crime. I presume coming from "Stanley knife", there's all kinds of word association people can do. But most people grow up and don't judge people on something so mindlessly pathetic.

If I'm honest, if I met a child called Shanequa, I'd have a rough idea of who would be bringing this child up. Though its none of my business.

Didn't this horse-faced grommit come to our attention via The Apprentice? With Alan Sugar? A man from a working class background who could buy and sell her without getting out of bed.

My aunt's called Sylvia
but I get Raph's point, it's a very good one, that yeah we do make judgments about people with certain names based on our previous experiences with people with those names. Apart from Shaun on here, every Shaun/Shawn/Sean I've ever met has been a ****ing cock and I'm sort of biased against the name because of that, but I wouldn't go as far as not becoming friends with someone because of their name or stopping my children from doing so.Her points about asking "where do they live?" not being a geographical question is fair enough. Parents want to know where their kids are asking to go. You could call your child Xyz and everyone would think you were insane, but if you'd called them that because you were famous mathematicians and you'd built some kind of career based on xyz graphs and you'd made a fortune, I'm sure judgmental snobs like this Katie woman would hail you as a genius and find some kind of beauty with a made up name like that. Essentially she's combined her own snobbery with parental concern and laced the whole thing with hilarious contradictions. Conclusion: she's a prat, she's going to continue making a career out of making ridiculous statements because in the papers, all press is good press. |

Yeah, I got what you meant... it's just that every time she opens her mouth, she makes herself look more idiotic. I'm not sure that looks good on anyone's CV.

Not in the real world where saying and doing stupid **** is punished, but I often wonder how the Kardashians, Samantha Brick and all these other professional morons have more money than I've ever seen before...
