I HATE Love Island!

Its pointless! Its just celebs that have nothing to do, and want a free holiday

Would be a big mistake. Itv would feel the urge to put their slant on it and it would lose its originality.

Channel 4 will fight ITV for Big Brother says Lygo

by Mark Banham Brand Republic 24 Aug 2006

LONDON - Kevin Lygo, the Channel 4 director of programmes, has said that the channel will fight to retain the rights to broadcast 'Big Brother', despite speculation that a rival bid is being prepared by ITV to snatch the format away as part of a plan to revitalise the station.

The contract to broadcast the show exclusively on Channel 4 ends this year and the broadcaster could lose its grip on the highly rated series if a big money offer were to present itself from another network.

It is understood that Channel 4 is not in a position to negotiate an exclusive deal and that a bidding war could ensue after the eighth series of the Endemol-produced format ends in 2007.

Lygo went on the defensive at the launch of Channel 4's autumn schedule yesterday. He said: "I'm sure ITV has been in conversations with Endemol. I think they have been for about a year, and there is some acceleration now.

"Next year ['Big Brother'] is on Channel 4. Beyond that it hasn't been decided but we want to keep it on the channel.

"If it goes, it will be with our full knowledge, but I don't want that to happen and I can't see it happening", he said.

The contract for 'Big Brother' is believed to cost Channel 4 over Ł10m a year, but the rewards it reaps are far higher, with advertising, interactive and online revenues making the show a money-spinner for the station.

From voting alone, Channel 4 pulls in over Ł3m, while the Carphone Warehouse's sponsorship of the show is another multimillion-pound deal.

This year, there was an explosion in ringtones, with Tourettes sufferer and eventual winner Pete being the most popular download. Sales of a Pete ringtone are estimated to pull in as much as Ł1m.

Series seven of 'Big Brother' pulled in a total audience of 8.2m for the final of the show, achieving a mammoth 45.6% share of the total viewing audience.

Unofficial Barb overnight figures recorded an average of audience of 7.7m for the final show, in which Tourettes sufferer Pete walked away with the Ł100,000 prize after receiving 61.2% of the final vote.

This figure was up on last year's series finale, which averaged 6.7m viewers, and peaked at 7.8m.

The show has trounced ITV's rival reality show 'Love Island' in the television ratings war.

Some people have very short memories.

Not long ago, Channel four ruined series after series of new shows they brought to terrestrial viewing. All for seasonal sports shows they bought without realising.

I am of course talking about, in the first instance of the sci fi series Babylon 5. What should have been an awesome epic experience to rival and surpass Star Wars, was massacred on C4 different days, different times, weeks missed, shows shown in the wrong order. You name it, they done it.

ITV are of course just as bad, though.

In this day and age, it's quite difficult to watch all the favourite shows when they're on. Especially if you're doing different things during the week.

Tivo for everyone!!

Yep! That's why (like you said) you buy TiVo.

Are US things really condensed like that in the UK?

We have Babylon 5 on the Sci-Fi Channel,
Lost/Desperate Housewives on ABC,
The West Wing on NBC,
and etc.

I think the only solution for this problem is to set up a petition so that ITV can't get their grubby theiving hands on Big Brother. Big Brother belongs to Channel 4 and thats the end of it. ITV are as green eyed as they come, they have got Love Island, which from next year will be Nicknamed BEACH BROTHER, and will see people from the public living on the isand instead of celebs ( WHEREVER DID THEY GET THAT IDEA FROM). ITV have X Factor, that is a money spinner for them why do they need Big Brother. Its just another way of weedleing money from us. ITV are all about the money and nothing else, Channel 4 know how popular Big Brother is for them and they dont care about the money. We need to do something. We can't let them take this away from us, No WAY!!!!!
