Well because I fidget and I have a chair next to the radiator, i was just feeling the back of it because I wanted to warm my hand up.

I start fidgeting while I watch tv and then I take no notice as I accidently slip my finger through the gap

.....ok, well you either have to Velcro yourself to the chair and stop fidgeting or move the chair to another position in the room which doesn't have a radiator next to it...or maybe ask your mum to remove all the radiators from the house but she might not like that idea.....
