No ... but that argument extends to so many recreational activities. No one needs to do anything but if that's what people want to do it's entirely their prerogative and if anything isn't needed it's their basic rights being revoked under the guise of 'morality'.

What's also grating is this misconception you seem to have about 'druggies' being smelly, psychotic freaks injecting needles at your local park, which is wrong. Certainly being high doesn't affect your cognitive abilities in the sense that you can still function totally normal as you usually would, so I'm not really sure what you're getting at with that one.

How many drug users do you know, actually? Because the majority of cannabis smokers at least are perfectly normal, functional members of society who enjoy the odd spliff from time to time, not spaced-out nutcases who do them 24/7.

You'll always have to fight conservative forces in Ireland. In the republic Of Ireland, there was a "Condom Train", famously back in the 1980's, where mostly women challenged the illegality of contraceptives, and went up to the North of Ireland to buy, legally, condoms and bring them back to Ireland and face the gauntlet of the customs and the Law. They made a big statement. But that was only a part of the picture of life in Ireland. You would not believe what outraged the public, and fell on the wrong side of the law only 30 years ago, and how much enlightment has been brought to the insular Irish.
