..I don't understand because the fines can't be enforced until after 10 days holiday have been taken..?...they would only get a penalty notice/warning of fine....

..yeah, but that's not what I'm saying though, Arista...10 days is meant to be a standard time before fines can be enforced so I don't understand..a penalty notice is just a warning but you don't get that unless you take more than 10 days unauthorised absence...maybe they had other time off that we don't know about..?..

There was never empty classes before this fine was brought in/enforced (might have been there all the time just never used)

I think the fine is ridiculous, I wouldn't pay it either. They went on holiday, not to jail!

The only way to stop it is to make the fines higher, so the cost of the fine is greater than the cost of taking the kids in the holidays. But I dont think hats fair as most families wont be able to afford to go at all then, and I really do think (especially with kids 5+) getting to know different cultures and such is more educational and beneficial that anything they might be doing at school. Of course I am again excluding kids doing their exams...even though most exam questions are pointless and you never use it again in life after sitting GCSEs

..but even then, I'm not sure how they would enforce the fines which is why this story doesn't quite make sense to me....but yeah, lots of people can't afford to go on holiday anyway but if others had to pay much higher prices, it would start to make holidays even in this country, become 'exclusive' things....

The schools round here used to allow the 10 days Ammi but now the kids all had a letter before the start of the september term saying no days are allowed at all unless in exceptional circumstances during term time. A fine will be imposed and in the case of parents being separated each parent will be fined per child.

..yeah, we had the same letter here as well, Annie..(I presume it's the same one..)..because it all changed in September but so far as I know, it's just that authorised absences for holiday aren't allowed anymore, except in exceptional circumstances as you said but after 10 days a penalty notice will be given, which is just basically a warning that if any more holiday is taken in that year, a fine can be imposed...but this school have just fined straight away after 5 days..?...

What is an 'exceptional circumstance' for a holiday?

Would saying me and gav were getting married class as that I wonder. Then we could convert our faith in a ritual the next year, then possibly have a funeral abroad....etc etc

Sorted

....but yeah, a parent's marriage would be exceptional circumstances..in our school anyway but I don't know if it's the same in all places...

Ridiculous, and further proof that those in power are increasingly keen to consider all children to be wards of the state.

If a child is well socially integrated and isn't having problems understanding or keeping up with school work, then it is no one else's ****ing business how many days they are or aren't in school! If they are performing poorly academically then, yes, fine, questions need to be asked. Otherwise, what exactly is the problem? Urgh.

a penalty notice includes a fine!.
anyone that's ever had a parking ticket will know this!,
their fine will not go away, they should of payed the first fine amount.
once the government makes these changes they become law

This is the type of story that really makes my blood boil. I cannot believe the simple act of taking your children on holiday early is treated as such a crime. I cannot believe this couple have been asked to pay Ł1,000.......

Absolutely unbelievable........I would tell the State to ******* Off and stop being ridiculous

What about all the thousands of children from poor families or underprivileged families who miss school by playing truant.

Or the thousands of Children from single parent families who have to look after their younger siblings and miss school as a result or the children who miss school because their parents or parent is sick and they are carers for them ??

I don't see the state trying to fine those parents thousands of pounds becuase their children have missed some school time.

Utter nonsense of the highest order , completely unfair and unjust and NO way should they even attempt to pay it.....!!!!!

Can anyone confirm to me what age they think the "child" is on the far right, the one with the hoop earrings and groomed eyebrows?
