..I don't think that you can get much more 'normal' than breast-feeding, Arista.....it's fine if they want to have that rule, they're completely entitled to but it was badly thought out and enforced ..why allow mothers into the restaurant to eat with young babies with them if they object to the feeding of young babies in that restaurant and if their rule is that they have to be covered by a huge napkin..then why not discreetly say so when they arrive rather than embarrass them at the table and when they've already committed to eating there already..give them that choice to still choose to have tea...?...this is Claridges and they really should have known better because they do pride themselves on their service and also charge extremely high prices and there really is no 'excuse' Arista...it's a badly thought out rule, it's badly and tactlessly executed, no matter how 'polite' they were when they asked her to use the napkin and they deserve for her to point that out...whether that be on Twitter or however she decides to do that....

I personally wouldn't even find a couple stripping off and having sex - including 'tit sucking' - objectionable in a dining room where I was dining , so I certainly wouldn't object or be offended by a mother discreetly breastfeeding her infant.

Breasts are totally different things after the birth of a child.They're not our play things anymore for a while.
There is nothing embarrassing or disturbing about an uncovered breast that is feeding a baby unless you're immature as feck or under the age of 15.
You can plan to feed your baby before you go out but babies get hungry when they decide and it's not on a timetable.Sometimes they 'cluster feed' where they will be on that thing repeatedly for hours,You can't plan for this,It just happens.
As Ammi said,This rule is ill thought out.They should either ban babies from their restaraunts or just let them get on with it.The sheet is just drawing attention to it.You could'nt even see the tit before.

..yep, I think so as well because babies need to be fed when they're hungry and for the comfort of the mum as well..so if Claridge's has a policy. it should be that no babies are allowed in the restaurant at all....not to say..yeah, you can bring your baby inside but if they're hungry, you must cover up or allow them to get distressed...

..that should be their rule though/their rule wasn't well thought out ..they don't know when a baby will need to feed so if they've decided that a 12 week old baby is allowed in the restaurant then it's not really reasonable to ask that the baby should be covered when they do feed...

I would think the other diners would be more uncomfortable / disturbed with a screaming hungry baby than one who is being discreetly fed.

Storm in a teacup again for me,I haven't a view really, I always avoid looking at other people if in a Restaurant anyway,so likely wouldn't have even noticed she was doing so.

However, 2 of my Cousins said, if they were going to a Restaurant they would ensure baby was fed before they went, 'if' babies were allowed in the Restaurant.
They would also themselves not wish to feed the baby in the presence of others in any event.

As to the Hotel, well,since it is happy for Mothers to feed their babies while using its facilities,then maybe it should designate a room where a Mother can go with the Baby to feed.
Doesn't sound a hard thing to set up in my view.

There would be uproar if they banned them. This woman has blown it way out of proportion. The hotels rules are the hotels rules. If you don't like them then eat elsewhere. It really as simple as that. Find a restaurant that allows breastfeeding or place some breast milk into a bottle before getting there?

Saying they should feed the baby at home before coming out doesn't work either.

I'm no expert but, especially when a baby is breastfeeding, they do it when they're hungry sporadically throughout the day. You can't pinpoint a time to feed them and then hope they don't want anymore whilst you're out.
