I've always found a teaspoon of Cayene pepper mixed with a little hot water, knocks a cold on its head. You have to be brave and i'd advise you hold your nose when you drink it and have a standby glass of water for after but if you want to kill a cold dead, this is a really good method.

Colds often feel worse than flu and colds are infectious so although you're expected to go to work, even though you feel like **** everyone resents you!
Cayenne is much worse than gargling salt water (though you don't gargle cayenne, you swallow it) but If you're prepared to put up with a few minutes of discomfort for potentially a very good outcome, its probably worth it. I now keep a Vicks 'first defence' when I've been near anyone with a cold
