you said there was some work to be done on cabling or such in your area
maybe wait until it's all up and running and then enable avi and sigs again
idk how fast your connection is, but on cable it should be reasonable
it wouldn't hurt to find out your speed and ask your isp if they could upgrade it
they may do it for free if you threaten to leave
also make sure your comp is running well, i.e. clear cache, review settings, etc y'know, do some housekeeping on regular basis

nah if avi's and sigs only slow down your internet well then no more avi and sigs for me
