I've read that it is being misinterpreted now, and the song is not about coercion, but rather the woman is worried about damaging her reputation if she stayed with the man -as that was the social convention at the time.

And the line 'What's in this drink?' was a common phrase then, that means something different from what it sounds like now.

To play devil's advocate though, the "current ideal" is that no pressure of any kind should be applied after a "no", no matter what the reason for saying no (and one valid reason would be public perception). No means no and all that.

And I guess the logic in not allowing it to be played now would be worries that, even though the song is from anothet era, the lyrics could still be seen to normalise "applying gentle pressure" and "the game / chase" aspect of things (i.e. The pursuer believing that, although the pursuee has said no, they really do want to and just need to be convinced to say yes).

That said I think it's massively over thinking the issue and no one is realistically getting life lessons from old crimbo bops.

Yeah I remember that phrase from watching classics. I actually like the song even if it seems a bit extra cheesy (to me).

Good.

Have never been able to abide it, especially the Tom Jones version.

The only people who can challenge these vile women are the sensible women. These women are gonna make men hate women, we're already choosing homosexuality in mass numbers.

These people give you good women a bad name, you need to challenge them.

I don't really know anyone, especially with the amount of people I know well, who at all align with what "new wave" feminism preaches... in fact, I have one progressive friend who is as hippy as they come, but even she's seen in her line-of-work (which is in a psych institution) how damaging victim-mentality has been to the rehabilitation of her patients... and she lives in MD where I used to live, so it's not a demographic thing.

I think most women know instinctually what is "bad" for us. What we're dealing with instead is people who are trying to tell the rest of society how to behave... so it's more of an authoritative streak than a legitimate cultural shift. That's not even me being optimistic, but coming from an honest feeling of what it really seems to be to me...

Well, I lied, there is one girl I am getting to know, but she's very anti-Trump by her Facebook postings (not without its reason)... I'm not sure that makes someone a "progressive" or "feminazi", though.

It's not even a song about rape though. That's just the connotation implication people have decided to get from it in recent memory.

I don't even really like the song that much, but that's not even why

It's not "about rape" but I think we all need to accept that it is a bit rapey.

Female: "I really must gooo"
Male: "But bae it's hella snowing"
Female: "I still wanna go hooome"
Male: "Nah you'll die in the snow srsly"
Female: "I totally can't staaay"
Male: "My penis is waaaarm"
Both: "and its coooold outsiiiiddde"

He's one step away from pretending that his Netflix subscription has expired and c'mon baby what else will we do we don't wanna get bored?

I think the problem is that some people don't understand that just because they think it's a tired rapey Christmas song, they don't have the power nor the right to dictate how others should view it.

Choosing what I listen to without anyone sticking in an oar.... that's means so much to me.

When you think of the things happening to women in the world right this minute, I don't think it's helpful to waste time and emotion over something so very trivial.

The worst trolls are "stealth trolls" imo, because they tend to be more emotionally manipulative and "feign ignorance" with the purpose of gaslighting. I wouldn't consider LT/Alf to be stealthy at all.
