...at least 10 dead are the reports atm.....

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A huge explosion near the centre of Beirut killed at least 10 people, injured hundreds and sent shockwaves across the Lebanese capital, shattering windows and causing apartment balconies to collapse, witnesses and security sources said.

The most powerful explosion to hit Beirut in years shook the ground, leaving some residents thinking an earthquake had struck. Dazed and weeping, some of them wounded, people walked through streets checking to see if relatives were hurt.

The blast occurred in the city's port area, where there were warehouses housing explosives, Lebanon's state news agency NNA and two security sources said. A third security source said there were chemicals stored in the area.

Footage of the blast shared by residents on social media showed a column of smoke rising from the port district followed by an enormous blast. Those filming what initially appeared to be a big blaze were thrown backwards by the shock of the explosion.

At least 10 bodies were taken to hospitals, a security source and a medical source told Reuters. The Lebanese Red Cross said hundreds of people were taken hospitals for treatment.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun called for an emergency meeting of the country's Supreme Defence Council, according to the presidency's Twitter account.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze that set off the blast or what kind of explosives were in the warehouses.

I genuinely thought the smoke at the beginning of the news vids earlier was the explosion then 'boom'

This captures the sheer mass of the blast a safe enough distance for the cameraman not to be sent flying from explosion. It’s practically a mushroom cloud.

...yeah it was unacceptable and I’m sure that those responsible will face ‘the maximum punishment’ as he’s said ...but it won’t change the dead and it won’t change the injured and it won’t change the destruction that needs to be rebuilt/the homeless etc...and that’s where his focus very much needs to be...

I feel for them all how scary

On a side note....you know how they are saying over 50 lives lost, so many lives lost, big catastrophe and a day of mourning. How come when the uk has that many and it was actually many more at the time dying each day our government thought that amount of people dying was showing success and they eased the lockdown and sent us all back to work and said it will be ok to go back to school....on a side note obviously I dont want to take away from this tragedy

Trump says Beirut explosion was caused by a 'bomb of some kind'...

At a coronavirus briefing on Tuesday evening, President Trump said an explosion that rocked Beirut earlier in the day was caused by a “bomb of some kind.”

Officials in Lebanon had previously stated the blast came from a large quantity of explosive materials that were being held in a warehouse, but Trump, citing conversations with top U.S. military personnel, characterized the explosion as an “attack.”

“I’ve met with some of our great generals and they seem to feel that it was — this was not some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event — this was a — seems to be, according to them they would know better than I would — but they seem to think it was an attack,” Trump said. “It was a bomb of some kind.”

What sort of bomb is preceded by a large fire though? In all of the videos if it, you can see that the fire is quite significant, with what looks like several small "crackling" explosions, for a significant amount of time before the main blast. Doesn't really make sense. Unless they're saying it was an explosive device planted in the building, knowing that it would cause a massive secondary explosion.

Also why bomb an industrial area? As much damage as there was and loss of life it would have been much higher if the blast centre was a populated area? It was a warehouse...

all of Trump's defense team haven't found any evidence of it being an attack. I think it more likely that Trump misspoke and then tried to justify it

Ammonium nitrate becomes more volatile the more it breaks down over time..it should have all been disposed of when confiscated, so the question I would be asking is why wasnt it.

Was it being stored to use later in an attack of some sort?
