maybe because Netherlands is a more popular nation who might attract more viewers for the opening game than two duds like Qatar and Ecuador

Holland vs Senagal is hardly an outstanding tie.

I'm fairly sure Senagal have been the opening match before. Think it was against defending champions at the time, France in 2002.

I always thought it was either the host or the defending champions that played the first match, that's why I don't get why Holland vs Senagal are opening.
