When creating a team, you must also select 4 players to be located on your bench as your designated substitutes, one of which must be a goalkeeper.
Players on your substitute bench will score points each matchday but they will not count towards your score.
Your substitutes will become active in your team and replace a DNP player in your starting 11 automatically if you have not made any manual substitutes during that matchday. Your outfield bench players are prioritised 1-3 with the first priority substitute being the first to replace a DNP player as long as it meets one of the valid formations.
Automatic substitutes will only happen at the end of a match day allowing you to make manual substitutions up until the start of the final match of the matchday.
You are able to sub out a player in your starting 11 for a player on your bench who has not yet played in the current matchday. In this situation, your points for the subbed out player will no longer count towards your score and the points for the subbed in player will count instead.
Welcome to FIFA World Cup Fantasy, where you can compete by creating your own team of 15 players who will score points based on their actual performances during the World Cup, challenging your friends and millions of users globally.
Below is a step-by-step guide on how to play, including registration, creating your team, making transfers, scoring and everything else you need to know to get you going.
2. Registration & Login
FIFA Fantasy Classic is completely free of charge. However, if you want to submit your team you'll need to log in or create a FIFA+ account. This can be also done once your team is created, after clicking the “SAVE” button.
3. Team Creation
When first landing on the team creation page you will be asked to set a team name. You can choose to do this now or at a later date.
You have a budget of $100m to build a team consisting of 15 players. You can create your team to match any of the following 8 formations:
4-4-2
4-3-3
4-5-1
3-4-3
3-5-2
5-2-3
5-3-2
5-4-1
You can change your formation by removing a player from one position and adding in a player from another.
There will be restrictions on how many players you can select per nation depending on the stage of the tournament, outlined below:
Tournament Stage Restriction
Group Stage Max 3 players per nation
Round of 16 Max 4 players per nation
Quarter Final Max 5 players per nation
Semi-Final Max 6 players per nation
Final Max 8 players per nation
You are able to add players to your team by pressing the + icon next to any available player on the player pool.
You can remove players from your team by pressing the “Remove X” icon located on the player profile, which can be opened by clicking on a players shirt.
If you don’t want to manually select your matchday your team, you have the option to autofill your team.
Before you save your team you should choose one of your players to be your team captain. To choose your captain, click one of the players in your team and select the ‘Captain’ button on his player profile. Your captain will score you double points so choose carefully!
Please note: Captains can be changed during the tournament, for more information about the rules for changing your captain please refer to the dedicated section below.
You are able to make unlimited changes to your team up until the first match of the FIFA World Cup kicks off at 19:00pm AST on 20th November, 2022.
4. Player States: Locked and Unlocked
The players who you have selected for your team will either display as Locked or Unlocked once a Matchday has begun. These two states are determined as follows:
Unlocked Players:
Players display as unlocked when the team they play for has yet to play in the current Matchday
Locked Players
Players display as locked once the match of team they play for has begun in the current Matchday. If a player is locked you will see a padlock icon against them on both your team and in the player list.
Certain actions in the game are either restricted or different depending if they are performed against a locked player (for example, transfers). The below sections of this game guide will explain these scenarios in more detail (and provide examples).
5. Changing Your Captain
Each Matchday, the player you choose as your captain will score double points.
While ultimately only one (1) player can score double points as your Captain per Matchday, you do have the option change your captain after the Matchday has started according to the following rules.
Changing Between Unlocked Players
You can change your captain an unlimited number of times between unlocked players (i.e. between two players who have both not played in the current Matchday).
Changing Your Captain After He Is Locked
You have 1 (one) opportunity each Matchday to change your captain after he has locked (eg after his team has played their match). However in this situation you can only change your captain to a player who has not yet played in the Matchday (I.e. an Unlocked player).
Once you have confirmed this change, you will not be able to change your captain again during the current Matchday.
Please note: In this scenario you will not retain the doubled points of your previous captain. Your new player will now score double points for your team instead. Please also note that doubled points from your previous captain will only be removed from your team’s score when the next fixture in the Matchday commences.
Example: Player A is selected as captain. They play and score 10 points during the Matchday, becoming locked. As captain, these points will double to 20. However, you then decide to to change your captain to Player B (who is unlocked). Once this change has been saved, Player A's points will return to 10. Even though Player B is unlocked, you will no longer be allowed to switch captain to another unlocked player, as you have already made a captain change involving a locked player.
When Player B does play in the Matchday, his points will be doubled.
One final important guidance to changing Captains: You will not be able to change Captain from a locked player while the player’s team is currently playing (live). You will need to wait for their fixture to conclude before initiating the captain change.
6. Substitutions
When creating a team, you must also select 4 players to be located on your bench as your designated substitutes, one of which must be a goalkeeper.
Players on your substitute bench will score points each matchday but they will not count towards your score.
Your substitutes will become active in your team and replace a DNP player in your starting 11 automatically only if you have not made any Manual Substitutions during that matchday. Your outfield bench players are prioritised 1-3 with the first priority substitute being the first to replace a DNP player providing it meets a valid formation.
Automatic Substitutions will only happen at the end of a Matchday.
Manual Substitutions can be initiated by the user during the Matchday. A Manual Substitution is only when you sub out a locked player from your lineup for an unlocked player from your bench.
Similarly to Captains, you can make unlimited substitutions between unlocked players in the Matchday, which won’t affect your eligibility to receive Automatic Substitutions at the end of the Matchday.
However, you are able to sub out a locked player from your lineup for an unlocked player on your bench. If you do this, you will lose the points for the subbed out player from your team score (this deduction will be applied when the next fixture in the Matchday commences). You will receive the points for your subbed in player when they begin playing in the Matchday.
As soon as you confirm a Manual Substitution, your team will be exempt from Automatic Substitutions at the end of the Matchday.
You will also be able to sub out a previously subbed in player, provided you still have unlocked players on the Bench.
One caveat to Manual Substitutions is that you will not be able to initiate this while a locked player is currently playing (live). You will need to wait for their fixture to conclude before initiating the substitution.
7. Boosters
Once the tournament begins, you will have the opportunity to use one of 3 available boosters:
Wildcard – Will allow you to make unlimited transfers within a specific round (cannot be used for the first match of the group stage or for the round of 16)
12th Man – Will allow you to select 1 additional player outside your existing squad, to score points for your team in a matchday. When selected, the 12th man cannot be substituted, captained or transferred. You can select any player to be your twelfth man s budget or team restrictions do not count here.
Power Captain – Will allow you to get double points from whichever player scores the most points from your starting 11. This player will automatically be assigned the captaincy.
You will not be able to reverse a booster once it has been confirmed and a booster will remain active up until the end of the current matchday.
All Boosters must be activated before the first fixture in the Matchday.
A booster can only be used once and multiple boosters cannot be used at the same time.
8. Transfers
You will be given a limited allocation of free transfers to used over the course of the World Cup depending on the stage of the tournament. The limits on how many transfers you can make for each stage and matchday outlined below:
Tournament Stage Transfer Allocation
Pre-tournament Unlimited
Matchday 1 2 transfers
Matchday 2 2 transfers
Matchday 3 2 transfers
Before start of Round of 16 Unlimited
Round of 16 4 transfers
Quarter-Finals 5 transfers
Semi-Finals 5 transfers
Final/ 3rd Place Playoff 6 transfers
During the group stage, one transfer can be carried over into the next group stage matchday however, due to the unlimited transfer limit between the last game of Matchday 3 and the start of the Round of 16 you will not be able to carry a transfer over at this stage.
During any stage of the tournament, you are able to exceed your transfer allocation for that round but each additional transfer you make will deduct 3 points off your total points. This deduction will be applied when the next fixture in the Matchday commences.
Matchday Transfer allocations are unlocked at the start of the Matchday (see below for more information on how Matchdays change over).
When making transfers you have two options:
1. Transfer an unlocked player for another unlocked player
a. This transfer will be processed instantly, and your new player will begin scoring points in the current Matchdays. You will not receive any points this Matchday for the player you transferred out
2. A Transfer involving a locked player
a. If you do this, the transfer will only become active for the next Matchday
b. If the player you transferred out was locked, you will keep the points they earned this Matchday
c. If the player you transferred in was locked, but your outgoing player was unlocked. You will still receive the points for your unlocked player when they play in the Matchday. However, you will not be able to make another transfer involving this player in the current Matchday (as they are involved in an upcoming Transfer).
d. One final caveat is that users will be unable to transfer out a locked player in Matchday 3. This is because after this Matchday there will be a transfer amnesty (so you would effectively be wasting this transfer).
Either type of transfer will come out of your current Matchday allocation.
Transfers cannot be reset once they have been confirmed.
You will be able to roll over one unused free transfer per Matchday.
9. Matchdays
A Matchday at the FIFA World Cup is a round in which all active teams play once.
You can only make changes to your team (Transfers, Captain changes, Substitutions, Boosters) within the current Matchday. You will be able to view your team for the upcoming Matchday, but you will not be able to make any changes until the current Matchday has concluded.
Matchday 1 will start with the kick-off of Qatar v Ecuador on Sunday 20th November, 19:00 AST. At this point, you will unlock your two (2) Matchday 1 Transfers and will no longer be able to make unlimited free changes to your team.
The Matchday ends at midnight AST on the day of the final fixture in the Matchday.
Example: Matchday 1 will conclude at midnight AST on Thursday 24th November, at which point the game will rollover to Matchday 2. You will unlock your Matchday 2 Transfer allocations, and you can start setting up your team for the next Matchday.
