Yousaf sought deal with Alba Party this morning, claims Salmond
Alex Salmond, the leader of the Alba Party, claimed Humza Yousaf was trying to do a deal to stay in power early this morning. He said Mr Yousaf “had phoned at half past seven this morning”. Mr Salmond told the BBC Radio 4 World At One programme: “At half past seven this morning he was trying to do a deal with Alba and complimented the proposals we had made as ‘very reasonable’. “The reason he didn’t do a deal with Alba is because there were forces within his own party who stopped him doing it. Let’s call them the old guard.” Mr Salmond also said the next SNP leader should not be appointed via coronation: “I do think the SNP membership should have a choice.” DT |

Forbes giving ‘serious consideration’ to fresh leadership run
It is understood that despite John Swinney indicating he will run to become the next SNP leader, Kate Forbes is giving “serious consideration” to opposing him, writes Daniel Sanderson, our Scotland Correspondent. The 34-year-old former Finance Secretary is currently weighing up a second leadership bid, after she came close to defeating Humza Yousaf last year, in the face of overwhelming opposition from the party establishment. “Nobody doubts John’s longstanding commitment to the SNP,” an ally of Ms Forbes said. “But maybe the question to ask is to what extent is he the future? “Kate said last time continuity won’t cut it, and it didn’t. What is John if not continuity? Kate is still very popular with members and has been vindicated on almost everything she said in the last campaign. She is giving it serious consideration.” |

John Swinney would be a likely better choice if they want to be sure of the Green party's support.
Kate Forbes is not cared much for by the Green's for some of her views. |

He was going to beat Cameron until the articles about what his Dad had said about the UK during WWII started circling around, hence why Cameron still only scraped a majority vote, because people didn't like his first term.

SIR – Enough is enough. With the latest SNP resignation, the abject
performance of the Welsh Senedd and the divisive politics being pursued by Sadiq Khan in London, it is time for a national referendum on devolution. The option of returning powers to Westminster from Scotland, Wales and London should be a matter for the United Kingdom as a whole. The savings made by such a move would be huge, and there would be a chance to get rid of some of the tinpot laws generated by devolved governments. Devolution has been a disaster, and the time has come to end it. Gareth Edwards Chester |

To be honest though, anyone who would suggest that devolution hasn't done anything for ordinary Scottish people hasn't spent much time in the North of England, or has no experience of trying to get decent access to services of any kind in England that aren't expensive private ones.
It's not that devolved Scotland has been run well but any buffer between people and the London-centric nature of the UK government is a positive. They do not give a stuff about anywhere north of Cambridge. Last edited by user104658; 30-04-2024 at 02:26 PM. |
