Max looked down at the bag he had been delivered, In it was a black outfit and a hood, directions for him to Centralia, and bank details for which he was to purchase tickets for the others that he chose - as well as $5000 in cash.

He sat there and wondered what it would be like to be finally adored and looked up-to the way he knew he should be. A life of going from foster home to foster home had left him lost and alone. He longed to find his voice and have people worship him. He often found himself in the library reading about the biggest influences in the world and he often found himself reading up about philosophers like Kant, Freud and Hegel.

It was here in the library that he had met Carl. Carl knew all about Max but this didn't alarm Max, instead he found that somebody had noticed him, at last, he had been noticed. Carl had told him about a group he was with who had recently dwindled in numbers and were looking to recruit. He needed somebody strong of mind that could lead people and show society who they really were. Carl had said he would be perfect. After weeks of meeting Carl and being told more and more about this group, Max had decided that this was his calling, all he had to do was wait for further instructions.

And here he had it, the instructions he needed. Now he just had to find willing people. He knew all about desperation and where people went in times of need. Online is where he started his search, scouring forums after forums to find willing people. Some ignored him, others kind of showed little ineterest. But he waited and watched and one by one they fell into place. He stalked them online and found where they lived. Most were far from him so he had to use his persuasion online, which had proved easier than he expected. Maybe Carl was right, he could be a great leader.

Some lived near him and he decided to watch them carefully, track them down and approach them personally. Luckily, Carl had provided the black clothes and hood.

It had been 3 months since the call and the time was now here. He picked up the bag and the put in the remainder of the cash into it along with a torch, the black clothes and hood and his favourite book detailing the life of Carl Jung. He smiled to himself. His followers were coming and he was ready to lead...

Alexa was a bitch. Everyone around her knew it and she knew it herself. She loved it. In fact, she thrived off of it. She had such power over everyone. She looked beautiful, had been the head cheerleader in high school and college, had guys wrapped around her little fingers and had females buckling to her every whim. The trouble is she was now bored. There was no challenge to be had anymore. Nobody going against her and little cliques to belittle to make her feel powerful.

Even her job as a lawyer left her feeling empty. She knew she could do anything and anyone she wanted. Then the email came that challenged her perception. It mocked her for not being as powerful as she thought. At first, she ignored it, but the annoyance soon got to her before she replied telling them to go to hell.

The response she got was immediate

Alexa cussed out loud in frustration. Who did this douchebag think they were? Okay she thought, let's play their game. She replied

She hit enter and waited for a response. Nothing. Pfft, just like she thought, a prankster. An hour had passed and she had managed to finish off a bottle of red wine while getting more worked up over the email.
She gave up, she was going to bed. As she went to switch her computer off and email popped up.

She saw there was an attachment. She clicked it and saw it was a bus ticket for this evening to Mt. Carmel and then some instructions on walking to Centralia.

Also attached was a cache of photos with the caption: they are your challenge.

Drunk, annoyed and eager to get that spark back into her life she got up, went to her room and packed a small bag before printing off the bus ticket and leaving her house. She would feel powerful again, no matter what the cost...
