For people who can fool themselves for a morale boost maybe. The number is obviously low and that is great - but it’s also obviously not zero and there’s little to be gained from pretending that it is. You end up like a Trump fan on election night, seeing him ahead in the votes and celebrating a win, then finding it hard to accept that the votes had only been half counted.

Netherlands: 40.000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses expected to go to Suriname next week

at first was thought to be half June but it is possible to send them earlier

there'll be between 500.000 and 750.000 vaccine doses to Suriname from Netherlands, also some work made for a donation of 50.000 Moderna vaccine doses

yesterday first plane departed for that country with PPE and Oxygen supplies

Default We can't 'scamper down a rabbit hole' with every new variant, warns Oxford vac Chief

The country cannot "scamper down a rabbit hole" with every new variant, Sir John Bell has warned, as Boris Johnson comes under increasing pressure to stick to reopening on June 21.

Sir John, a leading member of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine team, urged the Government to stick to the unlocking roadmap and ensure we "move on" rather than delay reopening the country due to new variants.

The Oxford University professor of medicine told BBC Radio 4's Today: "If we scamper down a rabbit hole every time we see a new variant, we're going to spend a long time huddled away".

He cautioned that coronavirus "is here to stay probably forever", and said that the Government should focus on managing "hospitalisations, serious disease and deaths" rather than cases.

The Prime Minister is due to speak this afternoon about the prospects for the June 21 reopening, but No 10 cautioned on Tuesday that it had not yet received the definitive data from government scientists and modelers at this point.

Mr Johnson is under increasing pressure to reopen as planned after the UK yesterday recorded zero Covid deaths for the first time since the pandemic began, and the NHS prepares to reach the milestone of three-quarters of adults vaccinated with their first dose by the end of Wednesday.

things can be re-opened and people can still be sensible, they are not mutually exclusive or at least they shouldnt be. I'm certainly going to be cautious while still living my life.

We have had doom and gloom about variants from the moment we had a vaccine and a positive way out of the chaos. If and when a variant becomes a problem we can do something about it, like tweak the vaccine and have a booster jab. No need to run away and hide anymore

I'm at Ruislip Lido.
What a gorgeous day and the place is stunning.
Loads of families with their children.
It really quite lovely to see them having fun.

The UK has hit a "dangerous moment" in the pandemic, an expert has claimed, amid warnings that "vaccine-beating variants" will emerge in the future.

Dr David Nabarro, the World Health Organisation's special envoy on COVID-19, said that despite low infection levels, unlocking restrictions too quickly in the UK could create a further "spike" in infections.

He also issued a warning about variants, saying "vaccine-beating" forms of the virus will almost certainly emerge sooner or later.

Maybe his time would be better spent educating vaccine hesitant countries!

if something happens in the future, that is the time to worry about it, we can't update the vaccines until there is a variant that they don't currently stop
