I didn't say it would be high deaths I said any increase in number will result in an increase in deaths, even if that overall number is low!

It's simple proportional scaling, come on Cherie .

I'm saying (and these are totally made up numbers) that if before vaccines 10,000 new cases = 500 deaths then we could assume that 20,000 new cases would = 1000 deaths... and let's say now 10,000 new cases = just 50 deaths... we can still assume that 20,000 new cases = 100 deaths.

Now that is obviously amazing, shows vaccines work, and may well be considered "within acceptable limits".

All I'm saying is, it's still the case that as case numbers go up, death numbers will also go up, even if deaths are a SMALLER proportion of overall cases.

we need to get to a stage where people are happy to live with covid the same way they are with other stuff. It's not going away and people will continue to die from it

I do think it's a complicated issue, and the speed & availability of information means that people in general are more expectant than at any other time in history.

but I think most people are aware people will continue to die from covid, just like they do from other diseases and it is something we need to live with so I think at this stage hospital publishing numbers is hindering rather than helping

Exactly.
Every year people also die of flu, but that's widely accepted.

I think we do need to start living again, people need to be sensible. I think now that the NHS and gov need to look at the mental health impact of this pandemic. In the last month there have been numerous incidents on the M60 of people jumping off bridges.....it's almost a weekly occurrence now

Yes the deaths because of lockdown are almost as high (or higher) as the number of deaths of people testing positive and dying within 28 days (which half won’t be actual covid causing the death..)

The amount of suicides, misdiagnoses etc are very worrying.

It sounds sad but there is always a trade off and lockdown is also killing a lot of young life/kids and whilst it’s important to protect the vulnerable - if two vaccines, large testing capacities, masks and social distancing arrangements aren’t enough in the midst of summer then I don’t know what is (good news is thousands of vulnerable have been saved from the amount of 1500 dying per day to about 5 now - but if this lockdown doesn’t end. And then things wil I likely to continue to rise into autumn and winter with the weather xondnitons for viral growth and a full lockdown again I think many on the edge mentally Will not survive another year - they’ve had it in their heads that come July I can live/ go to university / be able to see friends etc

The impact on mental health has been horrendous - especially for people who are more isolated. It seems to be hitting single younger-adults particularly hard (people who live alone, but are very active socially and so not used to BEING alone, I guess). I think that side of things can be hard to understand for people like me, still living with the people that 99% of my interaction is with anyway .

The impact on normal health services (GP's and other medical procedures, scheduled surgery etc.) can't continue either... I honestly think we're in a bit of trouble as it is with that... because the backlog is SO massive at this point that it's going to take 3+ years to clear. And that's if we were to go back to full-swing right now, which we still haven't. And that's another strain for mental health; tonnes of people stuck in chronic pain/dealing with poorly managed chronic conditions because they can't get surgeries or even referral appointments.

if enough people are vaccinated, things will settle down. We are very nearly there, and I for one am completely fed up with the media creating further unrest at every opportunity. They need to behave responsibly

Honestly hope they are hauls over the coals during the enquiry, they have been horrific all the way through

either bleating about holidays or Christmas or bleating about locking down too late, too soon, too long ..too short

I have to agree that the flip-flopping of the press between being "outraged" about infection numbers to "outraged" about lockdown length, and back again, is a bit bewildering.

But to be honest it does somewhat reflect the public mindset.

Don’t think the lateral flow tests work properly - they arrived and my flatmates testing negative and he has got his positive pcr result already. Likewise the girl he caught it from tested negative on the lateral flow test and her pcr came back positive….

Pcr is the proper test. I wonder how many are using them and infecting others? Because that’s 2/2 out of people I know so I can’t imagine the accuracy being anymore than 60% which is pretty poor
