Gaga, born Stefani Germanotta, took a break from performing after her last CD, "Artpop," didn't fare as well as predicted. The reviews even led her to question herself.


"I felt like people were holding me to a pretty high standard," Gaga tells Mason. "Everybody's hooting and hollering because, you know, I didn't sell 20 million records this time, which I did with my first album. And you know, it's not easy to replicate that. And you just -- I don't have a formula."

The stress of those expectations combined with a heavy workload, led her to step away from music.

"I have to make sure everything was okay," Gaga tells Mason. "Because it wasn't. You know, it's one thing to put a train on the tracks. But it's another thing to keep the train on the tracks. You can't just let a train out on the tracks and just run it out; it'll -- I crashed."

That crash, she tells Mason, happened midway through 2013, and was caused in part by challenges she faced with her management. "I just didn't even want to make music any more," Gaga says.

She's back now with a collection of duets with Bennett. "This album will prove to her that she'll always be around 'cause it proves that she's a great performer," Bennett told Mason.

Bennett and Gaga talk with Mason about their unique friendship, and the career advice that Bennett has shared with her.

Gaga tells Bennett she just wants to be happy. "And I can't tell you how happy this music makes me," she says.

Mason's interview with Gaga and Bennett will be broadcast on "Sunday Morning" on Sept. 21 at 9:00 a.m. ET on CBS.

And that, perversely, is the most surprising move she has made in ages.

But it’s Gaga who will benefit most from this album, which has the pair finding joyous common ground as they swing through 11 standards. She has been musically hamstrung by the common assumption that her talent begins and ends with the Auto-Tune switch; Cheek to Cheek reveals the considerable warmth and depth of her voice.

No doubt Lady Gaga takes her biggest risk of the venture singing solo in Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life," one of the most revered and demanding ballads in the jazz repertoire. Some listeners might find her reading hyper-emotional, and indeed she lavishes too much vibrato on select notes. But she clearly has studied the dramatic structure of the song and conveys it eloquently. Yes, there's a great deal of Ella Fitzgerald's gauzy sound in this "Lush Life" and elsewhere on the album. Yet there's also a gutsiness to Lady Gaga's interpretation, a willingness to lay emotions bare, that cannot be denied.

Her cover of Bang Bang is flawless , some of the duets are really good too (Cheek to Cheek and Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye in particular)

How do you think it's gonna sell though? I can see 100K + in the US..

Yeah, I reckon somewhere between 120k - 150k it originally hit like #10 on preorders on iTunes when it went for release back in august, and it's back up to #3 rn because of an interview on CBS, on top of that they sold 20k+ for the HNS special, and there's a PBS special that's gonna air next week too

Duno about the UK tho, i'd be surprised if it even went top 20
