[Ireland: government 'to reject new lockdown'

Ireland’s government has rejected a surprise
recommendation by its health chiefs to go into
lockdown and will instead tighten current
Covid-19 restrictions, local media has reported.

The National Public Health Emergency Team
called for a leap to the highest level
of Covid-19 restrictions, Level 5,
late on Sunday from Level 2 controls
that are in place in 24 of Ireland’s 26 counties.
The government will instead propose moving the
whole country to Level 3, local media including
state broadcaster RTE reported,
after a meeting between senior ministers and health chiefs.

Ireland’s cabinet is due to meet later on Monday.]

PHE data shows Manchester now has the highest rate of infection in England, at 495.6 cases per 100,000 people in the week to 1 October, from 223.2 the week before.

Liverpool has the second highest rate, up to 456.4 from 287.1 per 100,000. Knowsley in Merseyside, Newcastle, Nottingham, Leeds and Sheffield have also seen sharp rises.

The manchester numbers are getting high

I’m not Surprised, living here it is clear Manchester people do not follow the rules. My flatmate worked at Sainsbury’s And said the majority of Salford people do not wear masks.

A lot of Mancs where I live are sadly selfish, I’m sure Annie can confirm with the shops she enters also.

I guessed Manchester would end up the highest after coming across my locals

I’d sadly agree .

Tesco 100% mask wearing customers but smaller stores / shops sometimes as low as zero ..

Sadly, Manchester is suffering badly and yes there are a lot of non mask wearers here, more so than it would appear to be elsewhere. I've found the same as Zizu that a lot of the bigger stores people are complying but not everywhere.

We also have a massive student population that are spreading it quickly it would seem too. Lots of students locked down in halls.

I don't think the students are to blame for the massive hike though, its been going up rapidly even whilst in this local lockdown.

I have friends who work at salford royal and they have said that admissions are still low at the moment but are starting to creep up.

There is a vocal group on a local Salford FB group who are encouraging people to go against mask wearing and lockdown to suggest its all a conspiracy etc
