Cast and crew of Coronation Street have attended a memorial service for Sara Roache, the late wife of actor Bill Roache.

Filming of the long-running soap opera was halted for the first time in a decade as around 200 mourners flocked to the service at St Bartholomew's Church in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Mrs Roache, 58, died suddenly earlier this month at the couple's home.

Stars paying their respects included Samia Smith, who plays Maria Connor, Ann Kirkbride, aka Deirdre Barlow, and Chris Gascoigne, who plays Ken's son Peter Barlow.

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne and Coronation Street creator Tony Warren also paid their respects.

Mr Roache, 76, spoke of his devastation at losing his wife, saying: "We loved Sara very much and we are all in a state of shock.

"We can't believe she is no longer with us."

The cause of her death has not yet been released.

Show bosses have told Mr Roache, who joined the cast nearly 50 years ago, to take off as much time as he needs.

The last time filming was cancelled was in 1999 when Corrie stalwart Bryan Mosley, who played shopkeeper Alf Roberts, died.

Coronation Street was recently hit by more sad news after actress Kym Marsh's son died after being born 18 weeks premature.

Ms Marsh, 32, who plays barmaid Michelle Connor, gave birth to Archie Jay Lomas last week, but he died moments later.

Despite the sadness, there has been some happy news recently for three of the show's stars.

Alison King, whose character Carla Gordon has just left the famous cobbled street, gave birth to a baby girl on February 11.

A day later, Wanda Opalinska, who plays factor worker Wicki Dankowska, welcomed a boy called Rafael.

Then on February 12, actor Jack P Shepherd, better known to Corrie fans as David Platt, and his girlfriend Lauren Shippey became parents for the first time after the birth of a daughter.

A spokesman for the show said: "Everyone at Coronation Street wishes them all well."

CORRIE killer Tony Gordon is set to claim another victim — by charming crimper Natasha Blakeman into bed.

Soap fans will see the ditzy blonde looking tousled and dressed only in one of his shirts after a night of passion.

Standing seductively by the bedroom door, Natasha — played by Rachel Leskovac — tells Tony: “Wow. That were a wild night and a half, weren’t it?”

But she assures him: “Hey. Don’t worry. I’m not one of those girls you have to surgically remove after one night of lust.”

The scenes next month will be the first major storyline for Natasha since she joined in Audrey Roberts’ hair salon last May.

They will horrify viewers who saw married Tony (Gray O’Brien) order the hit-and-run murder of love-rival Liam Connor last year.

Also horrified is Liam’s pregnant widow — Natasha’s workmate Maria Connor (Samia Smith). She is stunned to find herself feeling JEALOUS when Natasha confides in her about her romp.

A show source said: “Maria has stopped thinking that Tony is guilty of killing Liam — and has started to fall for him.”
