With almost 1.5 million pupils off school in the latest snapshot of attendance in England, one headteacher says he fears absence will get even worse as the summer holidays approach.

Patrick Ottley-O'Connor, executive head teacher of Westhoughton High school in Bolton, said: "Anecdotally, from the students, we know some parents are just concerned they are going to lose a holiday because of having to isolate.

"We're hearing conversations that those holidays are booked - conversations that we need a holiday and we're not going to stop going on holiday.

"Some students have even said that their parents have turned off the their track and trace."

He says he previously saw an unexplained dip in attendance before Easter and the spring half-term holiday.

Families have also told the BBC they are intentionally keeping children out of school so they can avoid a spell of self-isolation that would prevent them going away.

in scotland there are something like 3 or 4 deaths a week and that just doesnt justify keeping the country closed down. The infection rate will go up again, it's inevitable

he will also go on other channels.

He may say put a mask on in the Tube
but loads will not, and no one from Monday
can stop that

as masks will not be a legal requirement from monday, any situation where people wear masks in a busy setting should be considered a plus rather than those not wearing them a negative

If you have been double vaccinated like most of the population, your chances of catching the virus are greatly reduced. It's not the same situation as it was last year

double vaccinated people, well you can still catch the virus, but the chances of you ending up sick, hospitalized or ICU/ventilator have reduced greatly

Netherlands: majority of people want to keep working from home

they really prefer online skype meetings, 94% since the coronacrisis last year, compared to 52% before the coronacrisis

says minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, the evidence she got is at the decreased amount of traffic on the motorways

possibly being discussed for more working from home advice in the Live CoronaDebate from the Ridderzaal, 13:00 CET today

where also following points are discussed

- increase of daily new cases since the relaxing of measures of June 26th, more like parliament wanting more explanation from PM Rutte

- what to do about this to make cases go down, and how long this new lockdown must take for the cases to go down, and what measures are necessary for cases to go down again

I tested positive today after faling ill Monday night and having a test yesterday but weirdly I feel like 70% better today and I'm wondering if that's because I've had my first vaccine it'd making me recover quicker?

…I’m confused about the mask situation, I thought that we wore masks in crowded/enclosed spaces to protect others…so even if we had complete vaccinations, we could still be carriers…

they have better figures on it now. If you are double vaccinated and the people around you are double vaccinated but have become infected, the risk of not getting infection is about 75%. If you are with someone who is infected and not vaccinated, but you are then the risk is 50%. Risk of severe infection goes up to > 90% on double vaccination.

Those figures are excluding social distancing etc. They are refining them all the time, but thats why they talk about the wall of vaccination

..thanks, bots……that makes a lot of sense now, I wasn’t sure because it’s always been said that the mask wearing protects others so our own vaccination situation wouldn’t be the thing….
