Florence has more talent in her big toe than Lily Allen has in her entire body.

But there will be one OP! I agree, not people like you mentioned, who are just popular. BUt there will be one, soon enough! We've always have them, so its part of the gene pool.

It will take alot, and they will have to break some real boundaries, but it's not impossible. But like I said, people are too quick to use the term 'icon' these days. I can't see anyone being better than the ones we already have.

Depends. How many people actually cared about michael jackson before he died? Sure, he had a big dedicated fanbase but it took for him to die for the world to really call him a legend/great for his music again, and not just judge him for his personal life.

I think the same will happen with Madonna. Once the king and queen of pop are gone, it'll pave way for the Britney's, Gaga's, Justin's etc to emerge as the leading figures and it's a repeated process.

Errm no! Those people are glorified clones! Britney and them are Michael Jackson/ Madonna clones! They didnt invent or reinvent anything! Gaga same!

Legends are people who were pioneers. Elvis was a pioneer. Michael Jackson, a pioneer. Madonna, same. NOt this lot!

That is rubbish about MJ,Millions of people around the world appreciated what an amazing artist he was from the start of his career. Its only the press who have now done a reverse and started calling him a 'legend' again afterturning their backs on him in recent years.

The difference between the greats and those around nowadays is that everything's been done.

Madonna, she was the first female popstar to shock people. How erotic and controversial she was (on tour, the Like A Prayer video etc) makes her an icon.

Michael Jackson revolutionised the music video and has had a huge impact on choreography.

Now there's nothing really to pioneer. Unless there's a dramatic shift in dancing / singing styles, we're not going to get an icon some time soon.

I agree, its all been done, haven`t all the boundies been pushed?Gaga is trying but failing,of course she is extremely popular and I don`t dislike her but people who say she is the next Madonna, err no.What has she done exactly apart from wear a bunch of crazy outfits and had a handful of catchy pop tunes.Nothing.Its nothing we haven`t seen before.

yeah, 'cos 10 million albums, 35+ million singles, 126 award nominations, 56 awards won, and two sell-out world tours, written songs for & duetted with some of today's biggest artists, contributed to various charities +supported gay rights, && brought the collaboration between music and art back to the mainstream - all in just over a year - is nothing.

Jay-Z is already an icon in some circles. And he has years left in his career yet. The man will be an icon. Also, are we all forgetting about Eminem? Provided he can stay consistent and keep those albums coming, he is certainly becoming an icon in my eyes.

Anyone who will tell you Lady GaGa is an icon is a liar. We just have to wait and see. Wait and see.

I agree with Eminem, people said he's fade away after an album r two.....last year he released 2 albums in the space of 3 months and has relapse 2 coming out this year.....he has such a following that he can **** off for 5 years come back and still be right up there with the rest clocking up hits and albums....

I think Shakira will become a cult figure, as will Lily Allen as already mentioned. I think Justin Timberlake would have become one of the greats (people already treat him as influences) had he not vanished off the face of the earth. His time to cement himself has been and gone.

Lady Gaga won't be an icon. She'll fade away once people tire of her act.

Although she doesn't write most of her own music and can't sing live, I think Rihanna will become a memorable singer, she always puts on a good show and her music is constantly evolving.

I think Beyonce is the closest we'll get to one for the time being though.

I know I'll get burned for saying this, but Britney Spears. She's broken every record imaginable, all before she turned 30. The best selling female act of the 2000's, the first song ever to get #1 in over 50 countries, 100 million records sold, 7 sold-out tours in arenas and stadiums, the biggest public meltdown in history yet still managed to come back from the ashes, i could go on..

her meltdown was definitely not the biggest in public history :/

and I don't agree she's an icon tbh. Her face is iconic, she has a few iconic videos but SHE herself has done nothing iconic, she's a product of other people's creativity, nothing is her. And every year that goes by she becomes less and less relevant.

I think Beyonce is the closest we are coming to an icon at the moment.. I can see a new face appearing soon though. Gaga is a good contender aswell.. I always think of her as the future of music and celebrity culture.

I think britney is an icon, not for her music though she's a whole industry in herself, not by choice, by fascination.

I think Britney Spears is the female popstar and the one others aspire to be like (musically of course). Shes had a big impact on pop even if she is just a manufactured product. The Spice Girls were manufactured even down to each playing individual roles yet they're hailed as the best British girl band of all time.

She is becoming irrelevant now but until around 2006 she was as big as it gets, and her come back was one of the biggest of the noughties.

And thats coming from someone who can't stand the woman.

The thing about Britney is that she's not a personality - ANYONE could have been moulded the way she was.
