The fact that they were kids is even more sickening. They had their whole lives ahead of them, so innocent

Tried having a debate with some guy about why he has guns, he said ''protection''..

He then said he has 7 guns

If there weren't guns available in the first place, you wouldn't need protection..from guns

At least limit the ammunition one house is aloud to have, you don't need 100 rounds for protecting your family

I was at work on break when I heard about this.

Absolutely awful. Just heard my mom say that apparently it's moved up to 28.

Where to start with this... It's absolutely heartbreaking another 20+ families needlessly bereaved in the most horrible of circumstances. Another grisly school shooting yet this time they are all innocents most of them under 10 yrs. It's hard to even comprehend.

How a young 20 year old could plan and execute such a barbaric cold blooded act is also hard to comprehend. How did he get access to these weapons and why did he decide after he murdered his mother that he would kill 20 young children.

Perhaps some of the blame can be laid at the door of easily obtainable violent video games that can have a dehumanising effect and alter the view of reality of a disturbed youngster. Coupled with access to guns and a deeply disturbed mental state one can see how this type of incident could happen.

A terrible tragedy none the less and calls now for stricter gun control must surely be heard as this type of incident is all to common and no less tragic...!!!

Thanks for the updates, Arista, BBC has had very extensive coverage from early on and have done a decent job, well done on their part. In general, to all, some tend to think of a lot of Americans as ignorant and not willing to relate their own horrors with the horrors of several countries. Foreign affairs feel like foreign affairs, very far away and perhaps less existent, while, locally, things tend to hit home a whole lot more. We're all susceptible, as a world, to feel on the tangibles.

The gun lobby in America is so powerful, that they've convinced people, not that they need to own guns, but it's their right as Americans to own guns.

Of course, the time the constitution was written, the gun law was being able to protect themselves from the government.

These days, you could own all the guns in the world, but if the government wants to kill you, they'll land a drone on your head.

Awful news. My thoughts and condolences to the loved ones of those who were killed! What a messed up and evil person to do something like that to fellow human beings...

America really need to use this tragedy as a wake up call and try to do something about tightening up the gun laws or more incidents like these will continue to happen and more lives will be lost, it is impossible to stop everything but combating some of the problem is better than not tackling it at all!

Sick buggers. BAN GUNS all together!! No household should have a gun to protect their family. If the burgler does not have a gun in the first place then the household doesn't need one. Just make sure you make your house into a Home Alone type trap or something to catch the culprits!

I think people do feel sympathy for the adults. It's just that nobody can really take in the fact that he did this to so many children. It's just the horror of it all means there is more focus on the children. The innocents.

The adults were innocent too, and it's horrifying that they were gunned down, but I think as a society we've become desensitised to adults being murdered, yet we never get used to hearing of such things happening to children.

The whole thing is a tragedy.. the kids who were killed, the kids who witnessed it.. the adults who were killed, the adults who witnessed it.. the families of everyone involved.. and even the family of the guy who did it. There must have been something terribly wrong in his head to have done such a thing, and the people in his life will be asking themselves if they should have known and could have stopped it.

It's not often a news story affects me emotionally, but this one has, and continues to do so..

According to the thinking of the NRA, this is the direct result of gun controls

Children should be allowed to take guns i nto school with no restriction on their type

If the children had guns then the bad man could have been taken out sooner

Those who advocated gun control are directly responsible for this massacre

So the moral is

SAY NO TO GUN CONTROL OF ANY KIND AND YES TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT OF ANYONE AT ANY AGE TO BEAR ARMS OF ANY TYPE!!!!

Returning to the UK and Dunblane in 1996, when the UK government was legislating against handgun ownership, His Royal Highness Prince Phillip the Duke of Edinburgh was over head saying, if someone kill someone by hitting them over the head with a cricket bat, then they will be banning them next.

The NRA lobby will win and gun control will be utterly defeated, yet again as the NRA are all powerful and have a strong grip on Congress.

Quote:
The gunman who killed 20 children and six adults at a school in Connecticut used a rifle as his main weapon, the chief medical examiner says.

All the victims at Sandy Hook school in Newtown died of gunshot wounds, H Wayne Carver II said.

A list of the dead has been released. All the children were aged six or seven, and all the adults were women.

The gunman, named in media reports as Adam Lanza, killed his mother before driving to the school and opening fire.

Head teacher Dawn Hochsprung is listed among the dead, along with adults Rachel DaVino, Anne Marie Murphy, Lauren Russo, Mary Sherlach and Victoria Soto.

Quote:
Children who died

Charlotte Bacon, 6
Daniel Barden, 7
Olivia Engel, 6
Josephine Gay, 7
Ana Marquez-Greene, 6
Dylan Hockley, 6
Madeleine Hsu, 6
Catherine Hubbard, 6
Chase Kowalski, 7
Jesse Lewis, 6
James Mattioli, 6
Grace McDonnell, 7
Emilie Parker, 6
Jack Pinto, 6
Noah Pozner, 6
Caroline Previdi, 6
Jessica Rekos, 6
Avielle Richman, 6
Benjamin Wheeler, 6
Allison Wyatt, 6

The youngest child to be killed was Noah Pozner, who celebrated his sixth birthday only last month. Most of the children who died were girls and nearly all were aged six.

Dr Carver said all the victims had been hit more than once.

Initial reports suggested that the killer had used two handguns which he also had with him.

Earlier, Lt Paul Vance of Connecticut state police said the gunman had forced his way into the school, and had not been let in "voluntarily".

He said investigators had gathered "good evidence" in the search for a motive.

The gunman killed his mother at the home they shared before driving to the school in her car and opening fire. Reports say the guns used in the attacks were registered to her.

There are conflicting reports about whether she had worked at the school in the past.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy made a television address saying the children were "taken from their families far too soon".

"What's important right now is love, courage and compassion," he said.

Newtown is a vale of tears. Jeannie Pasacreta, a nurse practitioner and psychologist in this picture postcard New England town, told me that neighbours were cancelling Christmas parties and taking down decorations, unable to celebrate amidst such searing grief.

Grief counsellors arrived at the firehouse where families have been waiting before going to identify their dead children.

Firefighters laid flowers at the white sign which says "Sandy Hook school, visitors welcome". That spot is rapidly becoming a makeshift memorial. A couple laid a bouquet, then embraced one another, weeping as they walked away.

People are at a loss, said Dr Pasacreta, who believes the lesson of this killing is to give more help to those showing signs of mental illness.

As reporters from around the world gathered outside the firehouse, there was a chilling reminder of what had happened. A black medical examiner's truck passed us, pulling a huge white refrigerated vehicle that is likely to have served as a mortuary for those killed in the shooting. This reporter wept at the thought of the children's bodies inside.

"As a country we have been through this too many times," he said in an emotional White House address.

"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."

Friday's killings took place in two rooms within a single section of the school, police have said. The shooting lasted just a few minutes.
'Absolutely quiet'

As they heard the shots, teachers in other parts of the building tried to protect children by locking doors and ushering them into closets.

"I told them we had to be absolutely quiet, because I was just so afraid if he did come in, then he would hear us and just start shooting the door," said teacher Kaitlin Roig.

"I said to them, 'I need you to know that I love you all very much and that it's going to be okay', because I thought that was the last thing they were ever going to hear."

Library clerk Maryann Jacob described telling 18 children to crawl into a storage room, before barricading the door with a filing cabinet. "We set them up with paper and crayons," she said.

Dr Jeannie Pasacreta, a nurse practitioner and psychologist who has been advising parents on how to talk to their children, says neighbours have been cancelling Christmas parties and taking down decorations.
Brother questioned

Early reports named 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, of Hoboken, New Jersey, as the gunman, but unnamed officials later said his brother Adam was the suspect.

Cannot play media. You do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version

Chief medical examiner Dr H Wayne Carver II says the victims had "a devastating set of injuries"

Ryan Lanza was questioned by police, US media reported, but has not been named as a suspect.

In a separate development, police in Oklahoma have arrested a teenager for allegedly plotting to shoot and bomb students at his school in Bartlesville. Sammie Eaglebear Chavez, 18, is said to have tried to convince other students to help him carry out an attack.

The attack at Newtown is the second deadliest shooting attack at a US school or university.

In 2007, a student at Virginia Tech university killed 32 people and injured many more.

Quote:
Most of the 26 people killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School were children aged just six or seven. The six adults who died included the head teacher, Dawn Hochsprung. Here is what we know so far about some of the victims.

Victoria Soto, 27: Details of the teacher's death remain unclear although investigators told relatives that she was killed while shielding her pupils.

She reportedly hid some in a bathroom or closet, ensuring they were safe, her cousin Jim Wiltsie told ABC News.

"She was trying to shield, get her children into a closet and protect them from harm," he told ABC. "And by doing that, put herself between the gunman and the children."

He added: "She lost her life doing what she loved."

Dawn Hochsprung, 47: The head teacher of Sandy Hook Elementary viewed her school as a model, telling The Newtown Bee newspaper in 2010: "I don't think you could find a more positive place to bring students to every day."

In October she shared a picture of the school's evacuation drill with the message "Safety first."

Officials said she died while lunging at the gunman in an attempt to overtake him.

Mary Sherlach, 56: Janet Robinson, superintendent of Newtown Public Schools, said that when shots rang out, school psychologist Mary Sherlach ran toward the shooter along with Ms Hochsprung.

Those who knew her called her a wonderful neighbour and a dedicated educator.

Her son-in-law, Eric Schwartz, told the South Jersey Times that she relished helping children overcome their problems. She had planned to leave work early on Friday, he said. He told reporters the loss was devastating but that Sherlach was doing what she loved.

"Mary felt like she was doing God's work," he said, "working with the children."

Lauren Russo, 30: Her mother, Teresa Russo, said Lauren had spent years working as a substitute teacher and was thrilled when she finally become a full-time teacher at Sandy Hook.

"It was the best year of her life," she told the Danbury News-Times, where she is a copy editor.

Lauren Russo had planned to see the film The Hobbit with her boyfriend on Friday and had baked cakes for a party they were to attend afterward. She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and the University of Bridgeport.

Emilie Parker, 6: Father Robbie Parker, 30, was one of the first parents to publicly talk about his loss. He said Emilie, the older of his three children, "could just light up a room".

He told reporters that she loved to try new things - except food.

"My wife and I don't understand how to process this and how to get our lives going. I don't know how to get through something like this."

Ana Marquez-Greene, 6: Media reports have identified Ana as the daughter of jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene.

The child's grandmother, Elba Marquez, said the family had moved to Connecticut just two months ago from Canada, drawn in part by Sandy Hook's glowing reputation.

"It was a beautiful place, just beautiful. What happened does not match up with the place where they live," she said.

Ms Marquez's brother, Jorge Marquez, is mayor of a Puerto Rican town and she said Ana's nine-year-old brother was also at the school, but escaped safely.
