As a PR person (allegedly) I think he could have played the entire game better with this Pièce de résistance up his sleeve.

Ah - that's where he keeps it - typical Dexter...

Having one ovary does not make a woman infertile... she will still produce an egg every month with her good ovary, so God knows why Dexter has brought up artificial insemination ... he could get still get her pregnant the conventional way (god help us). As many other people have said the whole convo is very strange indeed. No-one in that house knows each other well enough to even consider being parents.

Each ovary only produces eggs on alternate months, so the good ovary would only produce eggs every two months.

Dropping it into a conversation like this at such a late stage in the show must mean he wants the public to know and the only reason for that is he wants sympathy votes.

Got a bit of a biology lesson going in this thread.

They can't say you don't learn anything on here now....

1 quick question cos I'm interested to know. Do you girls make eggs as you go along or are you born with the amount you get?

We girls are born with the amount we get which is why as ladies get older they have problems conceiving as the ovaries start to deteriorate.

Actually no.

Girls are not born with eggs per se but follicles. Once they reach menstruation they release thousands of these and only one will actually mature into an egg.

Older woman release more of these which can result in more than one ovary being created, which is why it is pretty common for older woman (35+) to fall pregnant with twins. (Non-identical twins btw).

So older woman are more likely to create 2 eggs at a time, without fertility treatment, than just the one when they are younger.

It's also possible to produce more than one egg (fraternal twins) plus there are drugs that can make you produce more. (During IVF the drugs can make you produce up to 30ish).

What do you mean by 'produce'? Is that like releasing them from the ovary?

I'm sorry if I'm a bit thick on this subject I want to learn honest.

Yeah, they mature and grow then are released, usually only one per month

Ah right yeh that makes sense. What I don't get though is why are there 2 ovaries? Cos are they those things at the top like at the end next to the Fallopian (sp?) tubes? Do they take it in turns or something? Is it possible for both to release at the same time?

They don't take it in turns really, one ovary can release several times in a row. It depends which one has te maturest egg to release. It is possible they will both release in the same month but it doesn't happen that often

I think Dexter has merely misunderstood the situation.

Charlie seemed to find the artificial insemination comment very funny.

What chairlie has, well what it sounds like to me is Endometriosis. And you can have kids....I have it....I have also had a massive cyst and my ovary removed...you just loose about 30% of chance of getting pregnant....you just have to plan it right. Thants what the Doctors told me!
