Yes, I see what you are saying Lauren.

However, my argument is that without post-count, where's the incentive to post rubbish? I do think it might be the spammers incentive to be the top poster.

I could be wrong.

You could probably count on one hand the serial-spammers. I think to remove postcount for that small percentage of people would be a shame.

I agree with the tagging idea of threads, but I've been a mod on a forum that has used this technique in the past and it's hard to moderate because then the problem occurs that "whats the definition of a pointless post?".

Yeah I know what you mean Lauren. I have also moderated in places, and I believe it was suzy who said it's a "thankless task". You can't please everyone. That's why I sometimes think I should just take a week off and chill out when stuff starts to bug me.

After all, the internet is meant to be fun and enjoyable. Real life is stressful enough without letting trivial online rubbish annoy you...

Anyway, I need to go peel some tatties.. be back in a bit.. x

You use that reply in every circumstance, it isn't always that simple mate when theres an abundance of it.

I agree with Lauren it would be a shame that the post count being removed for the minority would be a bit harsh on everybody as a whole, but the minority should know that it isn't a game to want to have the most posts! It seems alot of the younger members are adopting this mass posting serial spamming and i just don't understand the motive.

Overall i think we're going to have to put up with it but it is sooo annoying and ruins threads.

Look i dont want to cause a big argument but why do use always have to complain if you dont like spam then ujust innore the people who are doing it and you wont see it. Celeb big brother is on so loadz of people will be posting and maybe posting short answer because thats all thats needed

So basically can we just make this forum peaceful then just ignore the person who is doing it there is an ignore button in the control pannel

Yes that would be hard to start with but once the moderators and the posters got use to the system things would become easier. The moderation system would have to based around posts that advanced and progressed a discussion.

It simple to work out those post from the one liners. There were some wonderful examples of great posts and threads today and they promoted so great replies.

Do you think it would help if these threads had there own forum space as well?

I think thats a good idea Red Moon. A specially designed discussion forum for people who are prepared to give in-depth answers with opinions and reasons will definitely provide somewhere for someone to have a structured debate. If the mods can deal with it then I feel it would be great for the forum

It isn't an arguement.

If you read back, most of the things you've just brought forward have been discussed.

The peace is always there, i'm not making you participate, it's just good to hear peoples views.

That would be great, i would love something like that. Because we aren't distrubing the rest of the forum but at the same time people who want a proper debate will get what they want without the poop and smilies etc...

It should not really be a case of having to ingore some members just because they make a lot of pointless posts, some of those who make pointless posts also take part in debates and also start off interesting threads, it's a hard choice to make to either ignore someone totally and not get the chance to read and reply to some debates or not to ignore them and having to read through a whole load of pointless posts.

I suppose the only possible problem with that is:
1) It won't stop the small percentage of people posting pointless smilies in other areas of the forum.
2) What happens to those that post in the further discussion forum with a pointless post?

But in response to my own question - although we can't stop 1) - it still offers somewhere without the pointless posting people.

That's the problem I have Dan... there are certain members who I have considered "ignoring", but I didn't want to miss out on the chance to participate in a discussion with them if they were in the mood to post something worthwhile. The "ignore" function is really only useful if someone is offending you in my opinion.

Even though I stated that I quite like the post count I really DO understand why some of you think it may be useful to remove it. Tanser opened a really interesting thread a while ago about the death sentence. I thought he had opened it as a way to seriously get your teeth stuck in and debate the subject and wrote a large reply yet it was lost in one word answers of NO

I dont think it is as easy as some people think to simply ignore things, everyone has to trawl through pages of complete dross sometimes to find a sentence worth reading. Harsh I know but hey thats the way it is.

Sometimes a naughty face or a roll of the eyes smiley is enough other times people post them just for the sake of posting.

I suppose a lot of it comes from some people being unable to put together a well reasoned argument in an intellignet way so end up using the smilies instead My theory is if you havent got anything to add why add something useless

But like everyone else that is simply my opinion

Yeah, it's a compromise measure. We'll see how it goes - accurate post-counts are still stored on the forum.

Things were getting silly. People were posting to threads just to increase their post counts. To run up the league of posters.

First we tried stopping the games threads adding to the post count, but it didn't work, the posts just moved to another part forum. So now the games threads have died and people post all over the place. Sometimes with just smilies.

Something had to be done. What we have is a compromise between the members that wanted the post count removed and those that wanted it to stay.
