What is Trump up to? He keeps going on about how smart and clever he is, so if he's really that clever then surely he knows he cant win. Is he doing this cuz he doesn't want another Bush or Clinton in the White House? All he's gonna do is take votes away from other candidates. Or is this his final swan song. GOP candidate Trump goes after Sen. John McCain's war record

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized Arizona Sen. John McCain's military record Saturday, saying he was a "war hero because he was captured."

Speaking at a conference of religious conservatives in Iowa, Trump was pressed on his recent description of the 2008 Republican presidential nominee as "a dummy."

McCain served as a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War. He was captured after his plane was shot down and was held more than five years as a prisoner of war. The moderator, Republican pollster Frank Luntz, described McCain as "a war hero."

Trump said McCain "is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured." The comment drew some boos from the audience.

During a news conference after his appearance, Trump did not apologize but sought to clarify his remarks.

"If a person is captured, they're a hero as far as I'm concerned. ... But you have to do other things also," Trump said. "I don't like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate because he is not taking care of our veterans."

A spokesman for McCain, Brian Rogers, said no comment when asked about Trumps remarks.

Trump said he avoided service in the Vietnam War through student and medical deferments, adding that he did not serve because he "was not a big fan of the Vietnam war. I wasn't a protester, but the Vietnam war was a disaster for our country."

The comments about McCain drew rapid criticism from other 2016 hopefuls. In a statement, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said the remarks make Trump "unfit to be commander-in-chief." Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush tweeted: "Enough with the slanderous attacks. @SenJohnMcCain and all our veterans — particularly POWs have earned our respect and admiration."

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker were also quick to condemn the remarks.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called McCain an American war hero, but sidestepped when asked whether he would condemn the remarks.

"I recognize that folks in the press love to see Republican on Republican violence," Cruz said. "You want me to say something bad about Donald Trump or bad about John McCain or bad about anyone else and I'm not going to do it."

Trump was among 10 GOP presidential candidates on Saturday's program for the Family Leader Summit.

WOW. I like Trumps directness but this is completely out of order. He's already gone to far IMO. This from a man who never served in the military. Its gonna be a fun campaign with this clown in the field but the sooner he's exposed for the joker he is the sooner he's out of the race for good.

I'm no John MCCain fan, he is the most responsible for the fame of Sarah palin but he is without doubt a war hero. He was captured for five years, had to endure unbelievable torture and then along comes draft dodger Trump to comment that he's only revered cuz he was captured. Trump already showing a lack of knowledge regarding military issues.

Already sick of these tough guy Republicans who never served a minute in the military. They'll send troops everywhere just along as its not them or their family who have to fight.

McCain, a Naval aviator, was shot down in 1967 over North Vietnam and fractured both arms and legs after being ejected from his aircraft. He was repeatedly tortured during his stay in the notorious "Hanoi Hilton" -- and refused early release when the North Vietnamese learned his father was a Navy admiral -- until he finally returned home in 1973 following the Paris Peace Accords.

The Arizona senator, who has limited mobility in his arms following his war experience, received the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his service.

Trump, meanwhile, received several deferments during the war. According to The Smoking Gun, which obtained selective service records for Trump in 2011, he received four student deferments between 1964 and 1968, and later a medical deferment in 1968.

Trump shows why he is completely unsuitable for a position in high office. I like that Trump goes after big targets but his lack of respect for people who have achieved things he was too coward to take part in show us what he's about. Trump is top of the poll and of course he's the name every one has heard of but this kind of disrespect will finish Trumps career on this kind stage.

Imagine Trump in diplomatic talks to say release hostages and he doesn't like what he's hearing. Is he gonna start calling people 'dummy's' and 'lightweights'? He's totally unsuitable for the job. What if he's introduced to the King of wherever s defence Minister who is also a four star general and war hero who escaped from capture . Is Trump gonna be saying 'I only like people who didn't get captured.' The mans an idiot and he's showing he has little understanding of issues on this level.
