18th January 2007: The Carphone Warehouse Group (“Carphone Warehouse”) today announces that it is suspending its sponsorship of Channel 4’s Celebrity Big Brother programme.

Charles Dunstone, CEO of The Carphone Warehouse said:
“Our concern has rapidly mounted about the broadcast behaviour of individuals within the Big Brother house. We are totally against all forms of racism and bullying and indeed this behaviour is entirely at odds with the brand values of The Carphone Warehouse. As a result we feel that as long as this continues we are unable to associate our brand with the programme.

We had already made it clear to Channel 4 that were this to continue, we would have to consider our position. Nothing we saw last night gave us any comfort. Accordingly we have instructed Channel 4 to remove our sponsorship name and branding with immediate effect.”

Hopefully the suspension of the sponsorship of BB will truely be a suspension and they won't completely withdraw from the show.

They wont withdraw Sol. By the time summer comes around and BB8 starts, they will all be falling over each other to sign up again.

Publicly withdrawing their sponsorship guarantees them so much publicity right now.

Regarding the 'white trash' comment - I'm not sticking up for Jermaine because I like him or anything - I have become pretty indifferent to him actually - but I don't find that racist. Jackiey typifies the type of person which that phrase applies to.

Racism, they should have sorted out, but bullying has happenned in all series of BB so I don't see the problem. If Carphone Warehouse gave a tosh about bullying then they would have pulled out last year when Shabaz was bullied, but since they didn't have the press blowing it out of proportion they didn't have anything to fear. The retailer has sponsored Big Brother since 2004, for an estimated £3 million a year. However, TV watchdog Ofcom has received a record 14,500 complaints about the treatment of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

The allegations centre around housemates Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara, who have been accused of bullying Shetty and making racist taunts.

According to reports, The Perfume Shop has also announced that it will be suspending sales of Jade Goody’s perfume, called Shh… Jade Goody, while she remains in the Big Brother house.

I maybe a cynic but notice the key wording "suspending". This indicates a definite hedge of their bets. If Jade can crawl out of this mess and ch4/endemol it will be back on. Guarantee. Perfect example: Kate Moss. Recently voted model of the year 2006. The brands that dumped her on the back of the drug scandal are kicking themselves. Don't be fooled. Even something as serious as racism can be glossed over and re-deemed with some serious PR. Look for the "I was Conned!" Headline in next issue of Heat (thos celeb sycophants - look up that word in wikipedia) If it blows over Jade will back to her supposedly dumb self, conning you out of money for fitness videoes.
