Anti-terrorism police in northern Italy have seized an air-to-air missile and other sophisticated weapons during raids on far-right extremist groups.

Three people were arrested, two of them near Forli airport. Neo-Nazi propaganda was also seized.

The raids were part of an investigation into Italian far-right involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the Turin police said.

The missile originated from the Qatari armed forces, the police said.

The Turin special police force, called Digos, led the operations, assisted by police in Milan, Varese, Forli and Novara.

Italian media named those arrested as Fabio Del Bergiolo, 50, an Italian ex-customs officer and far-right Forza Nuova party activist; Alessandro Monti, 42, a Swiss national; and Fabio Bernardi, 51, also Italian.

Initially, on 15 July, the police said the arrests were part of an investigation, started about a year ago, into far-right groups "who have fought in Ukraine's Donbass region against the separatists".

But the latest police statement did not mention groups fighting the pro-Russian separatists, referring only to an investigation into Italian extremists who had "taken part in the armed conflict in Ukraine's Donbass region". The police did not make it clear which side the Italians were on in this case.

The missile appears to be a French-made Matra Super 530 F.

"During the operation, an air-to-air missile in perfect working order and used by the Qatari army was seized," police said in a statement.

Separately, a court in Genoa jailed three men on 3 July who were found guilty of fighting alongside the Russian-backed separatists, who control a large swathe of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Hell, let's make this international and tell that to the victims of attacks on abortion clinics in the US or the victim of the Charlottesville killer. Tell it to the people who would have been killed by the weapons seized in the story above.

Right Wing extremism is a growing threat and you should be shining a light on it, denouncing it, not protecting the extreme elements because you don't want to admit your political allignment has a dark side you should want to excise, not deny it exists.

The Far Right are figures of fun in the UK. Only likeminded people could ever agree with them. This episode happened in Italy... maybe that's why the media in this country isn't covering it... Italy probably doesn't cover much stuff from the Right or the Left in the UK.

I thought the glib "the Left and their milkshakes" in the OP wasn't called for. How about daubing swastikas on synagogues, or smashing Jewish gravestones? Because the Left is endorsing that behaviour by their reluctance to deal with anti-Semitism.

I've actually said early on in that anti-semitic thread that I think those elements and the people who enforce them should be excised from Labour, I believe I might have used something akin to the phrase of 'cut out the rot'?

That's the difference between me and you, I acknowledge issues and condemn them if I oppose them regardless of politics, you only condemn such things if they come from the opposition but never from your own side.

So yeah, nice try but an utter fail. Whataboutism is not going to work here. Right wing extremism is a growing threat and by continuing to pretend it doesn't exist, the right are only letting it thrive. Acknowledge the rot and excise it, don't blame the opposing side for it. That does nothing.

It's easier to get clicks and sell papers when you tell white people that brown people are the enemy but they get unconfortable when faced with the reality that the biggest terrorist threat to us at the moment comes from the extreme right, not evil muslims but white people with extreme versions of popular viewpoints and people don't buy into media that paints a portrait of an enemy that reminds them of themselves.
