I thought JLS sung it? yeah I remember Scott singing it. Either way Diana was brilliant at singing it, it really suits her, so I am all for this song

Yeah I'm glad it's something a bit different, I just think it's unfair that the song appears to have been picked with Diana in mind.

Default The X Factor and Leonard Cohen? Hallelujah!

Quote:
The X Factor and Leonard Cohen? Hallelujah!
News that The X Factor winner will cover Leonard Cohen's classic has fans up in arms, but it'll be perfect for Diana's warble

It's great news that this year's X Factor winner will release a version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. It's perfect for Diana, the best remaining contestant in this year's series, and as well as being a tremendous tune it'll make perfect sense as a Christmas number one, particularly with a ridiculous, glossy production and some choirs a-wailin' for the big final chorus. Simple.

Except it's not really that simple, unfortunately, because already people are banging on about the whole thing being deeply inappropriate, lacking in respect (at least one of the people who has sung this song in the past is dead. It's very sad) and just, like, totally cheap and commercial, man.

If you have somehow not yet found yourself grooving along to this dancefloor smash on a night out and are wondering what all the fuss is about, here's a crash course in the song.

1. Laughing Boy Cohen pens the tune in the 80s. He writes some of the song in his pants. (Form an orderly queue please ladies etc.)

2. John Cale covers it.

3. Jeff Buckley has a go.

4. Rufus Wainwright throws his hat in the ring.

5. After Cale and Wainwright both find their versions associated with the Shrek franchise (long story), Jason Castro, an American Idol contestant, decides to warble the tune live on television, prompting Buckley's version to sell hundreds of thousands of downloads on iTunes, storming into the Billboard chart for the first time.

The last point's the most important, in terms of today's news. Like X Factor dimwit Austin Drage's recent version of American Idol contestant David Cook's version of Chris Cornell's version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, the choice of Hallelujahí as a UK single follows a successful dry run in the US.

One suspects that a posse of wailing "Proper Music Fans" and independent record store owners are already preparing to march on X Factor HQ, but if anyone is to blame for what will happen in the upper reaches of the top 10 next month it's Leonard Cohen.

Let's face facts: if you write a song so incredible and timeless that it becomes a modern standard, it's going to be covered. If people are that upset about it, and I'd imagine Snow Patrol have some thoughts on this, with Leona Lewis's cover of Run expected to become her next number one single, here's the harsh truth: if you don't want your songs being covered by X Factor finalists, don't write songs that are perfect for X Factor finalists.

Yes she should be embarrassed unless she thinks she is actually as good as everybody is saying.

On the other hand, it’s not a case of embarrassing her it's a case of the judges getting real. I don’t dislike Diana I just don’t like all the over praising she’s getting. I've been on a quite a few forums, websites etc. And regarding Diana last two performances the general consensus is negative not positive. Most people think she’s getting worse not better. Thus, I don’t like the fact that her mediocre performances are being wildly over praised and she’s sailing through every week. I also don’t like the fact that her fans still think her performances are amazing. No they’re not. This year more than any other year the finalists, and probably the winner, have been decided in the first two weeks. It doesn’t seem to matter what anyone says or how the other acts perform the game appears to be rigged. That’s not Diana fault but you can’t blame me for my objection.

Diana should defo not be embarrassed, what for? if someone keeps telling you something all the time you start to believe it, and at the end of the day what is so wrong with Diana believeing in herself? just because you think her performances have been crap doesn't mean she has too, she is a 17 year old girl enjoying being there.

But don’t we hear the judges criticising the others? Is Diana perfect? You’d think so from the judge’s comments. Don’t we always hear the judges say they’re only being ‘honest’ when criticising other acts. She and they are making a mockery of the competition

They should stop being such babies, so she sang it, who cares, it can work for a male and a female, its that type of song, they can all (expect JLS) easily work it to their own style

Of course Diana isn't perfect, she has been criticised, Simon did so the other week. Eoghan never get's any critcism and none says sod all about it, as always it's just Diana.

And Simon was the only one to criticise her when she was clearly terrible. Eoghan is different. The young girls are voting for him as they always do for the cute young boy. Diana on the other hand is apparently the 'most relevant artist in the contest'. That is one hell of a statment to make. Some of us, when we hear somthing like that we want her to back it up.

So it's one rule for Eoghan and another for Diana, ok that makes sense.

That was Simon who said that. Also Will Young, Gary, Mariah all these other famous music celbs have all praised Diana and said how good she is, Gary even waniting to sign her up, I think I will go with what they say rather then what people on here or other forums say, who have zero music experiances, and have probably never sung live to 11 million people in their life. They know what they are talking about, as doe Simon, to some digree.

The YGF ruin’s every contest . Some of us have come to terms with it and accept that the cute young boy will always do well.

Mariah praised everybody as I recall. Diana has an interesting voice so I’m not surprised Gary Barlow, as a producer, was interested in her but then again didn’t Gary also say Rachel was the most impressive singer?. On the strength of the last few live performance, Diana has been poor at best. Yet the praises still keep coming in.

Not according to most of the people who watched it. She failed to hit the high note in the chorus on every occasion she tried. It wasnt as bad as Yellow but it was not the standard of a potential winner.

The according to most people are the people who don't like Diana, so therfore they would say it was bad.

Anyway, next Saturday she should do well, she will have two songs.
