The outrage at a few creeping in from Australia.... didn’t we fly thousands of infected people back into the UK last year and put them in hotels on instead of leaving them contained on a cruiser ??

So far this year we have surpassed 10,000.

The total includes at least 482 people who succeeded in crossing the Dover strait on Wednesday onboard 21 boats – a record for a single day.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...-cross-channel

we have no idea if they have covid or criminal records or are radicalized or are just seeking a better life and free healthcare/accomodation.

Scottish cases appear to be rising relatively quickly again. There are 2538 cases reported today in Scotland, compared to 49 cases on 18th August 2020.

Deaths and ICU/ hospital cases remain very low and stable.

We weren't doing hundreds of thousands of lateral flow tests every day in August 2020 . Meaningless stat.

It's not meaningless it illustrates the increase in testing and value of vaccines

Australia: Sydney extends lockdown, and puts 2 million under curfew

A lockdown of Australia's largest city Sydney has been extended to the end of September as authorities struggle to contain a wave of Delta cases.

The city's five million residents have been under stay-at-home orders since late June.

Infections have more than doubled in the past week. There were 642 new cases on Friday, after 681 on Thursday.

From Monday, two million residents in the city's worst-hit suburbs will live under a daily curfew from 21.00-05.00.

"I apologise to the vast majority of people in those communities who are doing the right thing but for our health and safety moving forward we need to make these difficult decisions," said New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Australia set a record on Thursday for its highest daily infections since the pandemic began.

Currently over half of Australia's 25 million people are living in lockdown, amid Delta outbreaks also in Melbourne and Canberra.

Sydney remains the biggest concern. So far, its outbreak has killed 65 people.

The rest of NSW is also in lockdown, but Ms Berejiklian said restrictions outside Sydney would be eased on 28 August.

The harshest rules target Sydneysiders living in 12 particular areas of concern.

Along with the curfew, people in those suburbs - which are among Sydney's poorest and most ethnically diverse - will be limited to just one hour of exercise daily.

The measures were designed to prevent more people "losing loved ones", the premier said.

Critics say the state government could have acted more effectively to tackle the outbreak early on.

Australia has recorded 971 deaths from Covid, fewer than many nations.

But Delta's entry into Australia in early June has challenged a nation initially widely praised for its pandemic response.

Frustration has built over strict border policies and frequent lockdowns.

Residents in Melbourne on Thursday marked their 200th day of lockdown since the pandemic began.

Critics have also accused the federal government of complacency over its slow vaccine rollout.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison's government is under significant pressure, and has scrambled to secure more doses in recent times.

Vaccinations have picked up in recent weeks. More than a quarter of Australians are fully vaccinated.

Yes those in Australia
even infecting New Zealanders
with the worse Delta Variation.

They need Strict Lockdowns
to stop it.

I mean, no one can now get into to Australia
so they should halt all covid.

I do think both Aus and NZ have been guilty of over-confidence. That's not to say that they haven't handled it well, they have, but that's what's resulted in the over-confidence... they have relatively small populations and could easily have gotten out way, way ahead in terms of vaccination but they'd done such a good job of keeping it from spreading at all they felt like there was no rush .

On the plus side, the physical size of both relative to population should mean it doesn't "boom" like it has in countries with higher population density. They might have issues with large "pockets" in the cities but should be better able to manage those pockets with so much open space between populations.

Risk of contracting coronavirus at GP is same as at a festival, experts say

The coronavirus infection risk is similar at the Grand Prix in Zandvoort as it would be at a festival, experts told NU.nl.

The Grand Prix in Zandvoort will commence in September with camping spots available for attendees. The camping site will be able to accommodate around five thousand people. Half of the spots are reserved for the crew. In total, more than 200 thousand spectators have been anticipated at the races.

“The manner in which you organize the Grand Prix is similar to how you would organize a festival”, field epidemiologist, Amrish Baidjoe said. “When looking at from a standpoint of preventing infection, I do not see a difference.”

The fact that camping at the Grand Prix is permitted but multi-day festivals have been forbidden is not comprehensible to the events sector.

Clinical epidemiologist Frits Rosendaal from the UMC in Leiden also did not see what sets the GP apart from a multi-day festival. “The point stands that the Grand Prix is a multi-day event where a large number of people partake.”

Zandvoort mayor David Moolenburgh said on Friday that camping at the Grand Prix cannot be compared to a festival. At a festival, the vast majority of the public also sleeps on the grounds. This is a relatively small campsite compared to the number of visitors," the mayor said.

The mayor said he comprehends why the decision sparked disbelief in the events sector “but that is a consequence of the choices they make in The Hague.”

In accordance with coronavirus measures, only two thirds of the seats are allowed to be filled and all visitors have to show proof of vaccination, recent recovery from a Covid-19 infection or show a negative coronavirus test to enter.

More spectators are allowed at the Grand Prix than at a festival because during the races there is fixed seating. At festivals, a maximum number of 750 people are allowed.

“For now it is incomprehensible”, Baidjoe said. “We see that certain groups are not yet fully vaccinated. I would say: wait until the vaccination figures are higher.”

Police in the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney have clashed with thousands of people protesting against Covid lockdowns.

In Melbourne, mounted officers used pepper spray when elements of a 4,000-strong rally broke through police lines.

Police arrested 218 people, and at least seven officers were injured.

In Sydney, where lockdown measures have been extended for another month, more than 1,000 officers dispersed protests.

It came as the state of New South Wales (NSW), of which Sydney is the capital, recorded 825 new locally-acquired cases, the highest number for any Australian territory in a 24-hour period.
