if the delta variant hadn't appeared we would have been back to a pretty normal life by now. The vaccines are very effective against the early variants which they were designed for. We now need to wait on a vaccine that is more effective against delta and future variants. I think next year there will be V2 of the vaccines which should help a lot

See it's things like the bit on bold that make me start believing in Alf's theories ... sometimes the timing has seemed "convenient" for want of a better word. I think the part I find most confusing is that we had a sort of "flurry" of new strains being announced leading up to Delta becoming the dominant strain ... ... ... and since then we've heard nothing of new strains. It doesn't actually make a huge amount of sense.
