Madonna and U2 For Michael Jackson Tribute Gig

Vienna in September

Madonna and U2 are two of the superstar names being lined up to perform at a special Michael Jackson tribute gig which will take place at Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna next month (September).

According to RTE, events organisers World Awards Media have billed it as a "'global’ farewell tribute to Michael Jackson next month" and have also said "For one incredible night Michael Jackson's unforgettable music will be brought to life again. Some of the world's leading artists will perform Michael's greatest hits live in Vienna in front of one of the most fascinating historical sites in Europe and celebrate the life of the 'King of Pop'"

Event organisers have yet to confirm the line-up but Associated Press reports U2 will perform alongside Madonna, Lionel Richie and Whitney Houston. U2 will be in Europe supporting their 'No Line on the Horizon' album and Madonna has a new greatest hits album called 'Celebration' due out around the same time

85,000 tickets for the show are expected to go on sale on the 20th August.

Madonna and Robbie Williams sign up for X Factor

Madonna and Robbie Williams will make appearances in the new season of The X Factor.

The choreographer for the television talent show has reportedly let slip that the singers will act as mentors to contestants during filming.

Brian Friedman also revealed that Simon Cowell, the founder of the reality TV contest, has hired Whitney Houston and Rihanna, the Umbrella singer.

A source told The Sun that the details had not yet been officially revealed but Mr Friedman, 32, could not resist "blabbing" about the signings.

"Brian is really excited about this year's show because there are some great artists involved. He is proud to be part of it and admires Simon's ability to attract A-listers."

Madonna, Williams, Houston and Rihanna will give personal masterclasses to some of the contestants during the finals of the show, which starts later this month.

Last year mentors included the boyband Westlife, Take That's Gary Barlow and Mark Owen and R'n'B singer Beyoncé.

The revelations show that ITV producers have decided to dig deep into their budget as they compete with other programmes for viewers.

But the programme will no longer have to compete with Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday evenings. The BBC is to abandon its Sunday night results show for an extended Saturday slot to avoid any clash with the X Factor.

Couples will compete, face the public vote and have the dance-off all in a single show as the corporation attempts to make Saturday night ''Strictly night''.

It is understood that part of the reason for the change is the desire to avoid a possible clash with the X Factor results show, which may be shown on Sundays this year.

The new series of Strictly will begin in September with two special Friday night launch shows, but will switch to Saturdays only from then on.

Madonna sings Happy Birthday to Rocco

Madonna surprised her son Rocco as he turned nine years old on Tuesday - by urging the 50,000-strong crowd at her show in Denmark to sing Happy Birthday to him.

The Holiday hitmaker is currently taking her Sticky & Sweet tour around the globe and the star's clan was in the Scandinavian country when her eldest son, by director Guy Ritchie, celebrated his big day.

And during her concert in the capital city of Copenhagen, Madonna halted her set to announce Rocco's ninth birthday to gig-goers - and encouraged the crowd at the Parken Stadium to sing a chorus of Happy Birthday for the delighted youngster.

She shouted out, 'Happy Birthday to my son Rocco, who is watching the show right now and I just want to say that I love you very much. You are a number one son and maybe everyone would like to sing Happy Birthday to him.'

On Hot Dance Airplay, “Celebration”—the first single/title track from Madonna’s upcoming greatest-hits album (due Sept. 29)—starts the party at No. 7, the chart’s highest debut since Dec. 13, 2008, when Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” also debuted at No. 7. Since the Dance Airplay chart launched Aug. 16, 2003, only two other singles have bowed higher: Ciara’s “1, 2 Step” (No. 5 on Jan. 20, 2005) and Madonna’s “4 Minutes” (No. 5 on April 5, 2008) … “Celebration” also enters the Hot Dance Club Songs chart at No. 29—the diva’s 56th Club hit. The entry extends her lead as the artist with the most hits on this chart.

Madonna adoption saga on Fringe

A musical about pop star Madonna's attempts to adopt a young African girl is being performed at the Edinburgh Fringe by a Malawian cast.

The 50-year-old star is portrayed in the play Mercy Madonna of Malawi by a black male actor in a blonde wig

One of the performers, Shombi Banda, 29, claims he was heckled by the star when he performed for her in Malawi.

He said she responded to a play about the African cultural identity by saying "money is the answer to everything."

The show looks at how Madonna was given *custody of four-year-old Mercy James.

It also attempts to depict how people in the African country viewed the case.

Madonna first spotted Mercy in an orphanage when she visited the African state in 2006.

After a long-running court battle, the nation's highest court ruled earlier this year that the star could adopt the youngster on a permanent basis.

While Madonna has come in for criticism in the Western press for using her wealth and influence to "buy" children, it has opened up a huge debate in the southern African country, with some feeling the youngster will have a better standard of life overseas.

Shombi Banda said he had performed for Madonna in Lilongwe earlier this year.

He said: "It was a very nice performance with the show talking about someone who went abroad for 20 years and then when he came back he was complaining life abroad was very tough and how he had lost his culture and his identity.

"Madonna interrupted and said: 'You know money is the answer to everything'."

Toby Gough, who created and directed the show, which is playing at St George's West in Edinburgh from 7 to 31 August, claimed Mr Banda was also sacked for revealing a few details about Madonna.

He told BBC Scotland: "Because he revealed a few secrets about Madonna's time in Malawi, just simple things like how many security guards she had, the fact she was heckling him during his performance, he was subsequently sacked because the owner felt he was putting his business in danger."

The play, which is already a hit in its home country, fuses traditional Malawian dance with western pop music as it weighs up the rights and wrongs of a contentious story.

Without taking sides, it asks whether it is right for a child to be taken away from her culture if it means enjoying a life of privilege.

Robert Magasa, dons a blonde wig and white face paint to play Madonna in the show.

The show describes itself as "knockabout" and "irreverent".

Mr Gough said: "Scotland has a great friendship with Malawi and the big story this year was Madonna adopting Mercy, so it's a perfect Festival show.

"It's outrageous, irreverent, it's full of music.

"We rewrite some of Madonna's songs to tell the story of how she ended up in Malawi, the problems she faced being stopped in the process and what Malawian's feel about it.

"It is due to poverty that they are forced to put their children in to orphanages. There are ways for children to be cared for in their own countries, not taken to other cultures."

Madonna turns 51 on concert stop in Poland

Polish fans joined together in song to wish Madonna a happy birthday at a concert in Warsaw Saturday evening – just hours before she turned 51, AP reported.

In a break between two songs, a fan held up a sign wishing her a happy birthday and audience members sang, “may you live a hundred years,” a traditional Polish birthday song.

“I feel your love!” Madonna told the crowd of tens of thousands gathered on a large green field for the latest stop in her Sticky & Sweet tour.

Many of the fans near the stage also held up paper hearts. One said: “Adopt Me.”

Her stop in Warsaw fell not only a day before her birthday, but also on the August 15, the Roman Catholic holiday celebrating the heavenly assumption of the Virgin Mary – timing that angered some Catholics.

Several people who objected to Madonna held up banners outside the concert venue, and a Catholic group tried to spearhead protests in past weeks hoping to force the Material Girl to change the date of the concert. It failed, however, to win support from the official church or the public. Though Poland, homeland of the late John Paul II, is mainly Catholic, young urban Poles have overwhelmingly embraced pop culture and mores.

During the concert, Madonna also paid tribute to Michael Jackson, who died in June.

A Jackson impersonator did the King of Pop’s signature moonwalk dance move while wearing a sequined jacket, white T-shirt, white glove and white socks, while a large photograph of him as a boy appeared on stage.

“Let’s give it up for one of the greatest artists the world has ever known,” Madonna shouted, and then segued into a performance of her old hit “Holiday.”

She turned 51 over the weekend, and Madonna enjoyed a romantic birthday in Portofino, Italy with her boytoy Jesus Luz.

The Material Girl was spotted with her Brazilian beau at the Splendido Hotel yesterday (August 16), chatting on the balcony and having a special birthday breakfast while a bouquet of flowers was delivered.

Later on Madge and Jesus joined up with the rest of the entourage to grab some dinner and celebrate some more with birthday cake.

The night before, Madonna played a concert in Warsaw, Poland where she was protested by a Catholic organization for her religious views, as it was also a church holiday celebrating the heavenly assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Madonna enjoys 51st birthday celebrations

Madonna enjoyed her 51st birthday in the Mediterranean with her boyfriend Jesus Luz and her children.

Celebrations began on a Sunday night when the singer hosted a dinner party in the Italian resort of Portofino, where she is staying with her boyfriend, daughter Lourdes and adopted children David Banda and Mercy James.

At the Splendido Hotel, she was joined by about 30 guests, including Italian fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, where she was then presented with a cake, including sparklers on top.

The singer was then seen taking a private boat the following day with her children.

Dressed in a personalised basketball kit, which said "Madonna 1", she was pictured jumping into the sea and enjoying the company of friends and family.

Earlier in the weekend, she celebrated in Warsaw when her Polish fans wished her happy birthday during a concert. They held up signs saying happy birthday and sand May You Live A Hundred Years, a traditional Polish birthday song.

The ex-wife of director Guy Ritchie, she has previously defended her lifestyle saying: "Once you reach a certain age you're not allowed to be adventurous, you're not allowed to be sexual. I mean, is there a rule? Are you supposed to just die? I've never been a conformist."

Paul Oakenfold on Madonna: new material is 'the sound of tomorrow'

British DJ and remixer extraordinaire Paul Oakenfold would like to clear something up: He has never been naked in a recording studio with Madonna. “That was a joke,” he laughs, referring to Madonna’s April 23rd tweet via manager Guy Oseary’s account (@guyoseary): “paul oakenfold is running around the studio naked.. because i wont put the air on.. its hot in here.. but the music is hotter!!!! -M.”

But Oakenfold, who recently released Perfecto: Vegas, a two-disc set celebrating his popular residency at the Palms Casino, from which he recently took a break to join Her Madgesty’s Sticky and Sweet Tour in Europe, is dead serious about getting people on the dance floor with “Celebration.” The song, which he co-wrote with Madonna for her upcoming greatest hits package (in stores Sept. 29), is he says, “meant to be positive in the respect that you can do it, let’s have a good time, let’s enjoy ourselves.”

And while the song, which leaked online in July, has a party-time feel, Oakenfold tells us that he and “M,” as he calls her, were all business during their first in-studio collaboration. “It was very focused, very professional,” he recalls. “When you step up to this level, it’s an interesting process because you’re on someone else’s time, and you respect that. And that’s really what it’s about. So I was extremely organized when I went in there with the team that I had.” And he’s pretty proud of the result: “It’s definitely the sound of tomorrow. Which always becomes the sound of today.”
