Yes they will need to test it.

Tomorrow it goes New Worldwide Covid Alert

New 'worst-ever' super-mutant Covid variant
that will make vaccines at least 40 per cent 'less effective'
as flights are BANNED from South Africa and
five other African countries

yes, but any new strain has to be more transmissable than the current one or it wont take off. Also, i'm fed up with their "can beat the vaccine" crap. We had the same with all the other variants.

Don't people see that our booster program is doing great, its giving the elderly a bit of confidence, and then they come out with this sh it. It's intentional

Netherlands: today the day of the extra covid press conference

OMT's advice is to close pubs, cinema's, theatres, non-essential stores at 5 PM

but to leave schools open, however the organisation of the pubs, bars, restaurants a representative Robér Willemsen says they rather want a full lockdown than a partial lockdown since closing at 5 PM is not good for business either and they don't feel anything for keeping schools open, they think that will still get cases going up and a partial lockdown will have no effect whatsoever

so it is a difficult decision for PM Rutte and health minister De Jonge

You can't stop new variants entering a country, that has been proven over the last 2 years across the world. All you can do is slow it down a bit

I wouldn't worry. Vaccines can be modified to fight off the new variants.
At the moment we have ok, but we might need to do that if it's necessary.

I think the boosters are Pfizer, so we're good.
But i think Astrazeneca is good as well.
I've felt very protected with both of them.

but banning countries doesn't make any difference unless every other country bans them to, because otherwise it will still spread and come in through the other route. The other aspect is that usually, the variant is already here, it's been transmitted around the globe before anyone detects it. There are plenty things to get angry about, but stopping a variant coming into the country is not one of them

It will almost certainly already be seeded across the globe if it's started to be picked up in testing. These "names by country" variants didn't even necessarily mutate in the named country... it's just the country where the variant was first detected.

Surely banning all flights coming from those red list countries would be an excellent way of ‘slowing’ things down

If it's been picked up somewhere the likelihood is that it's already in most countries in some form. They don't check every single Covid test in depth to identify the strain, most are just done on a positive/negative basis, with random sampling to see if new strains show up. If a few examples of a strain start showing up during random testing, then you can be pretty sure that that strain is also responsible for many other cases, and just because it hasn't shown up in a random sample here yet, doesn't mean it isn't already active. Of course the more a strain takes hold, the more likely it is to be picked up.

This new variant probably isn't here in the UK yet ,but then again who knows.

It figures .. this would have to be more aggressive than the delta one ,oh great .

This pandemic isn't going anywhere.
