Prime Minister Mark Rutte called attacks on the airport in Kabul "horrific" and a "terrible tragedy", responding on Twitter. Two explosions at the airport in the Afghan capital left over 100 people killed. No Dutch diplomats or soldiers were among the victims, the Ministry of Defense confirmed.

"Horrific reports of the attacks at the airport in Kabul. Many killed and injured in a place where people were seeking safety. A terrible tragedy. My thoughts go out to the victims and their families," Rutte tweeted.

At least 60 Afghan citizens, 13 American soldiers, and 28 Taliban fighters were killed in the attacks, NU.nl reports Hundreds were injured, including 18 American soldiers. According to American officials, terrorist organization ISKP committed the attack.

Minister Sigrid Kaag of Foreign Affairs also responded on Twitter. "Outraged by cowardly acts of terror in Kabul. Our deepest sympathies go out to those who lost loved ones, including the families of US military personnel," she said. "They courageously secured the airport to enable safe evacuation of so many seeking refuge. In doing so these honorable men paid the ultimate price."

The Netherlands performed its last evacuation flight from Kabul a short time before the attacks on Thursday. The Dutch military evacuated more than 2,500 people from Afghanistan in the past week, including more than 1,600 people with the Netherlands as their destination.

"It is terrible to have to leave Afghanistan after 20 years in this way," Kaag said after the last flight departed. "It is with a heavy heart that the embassy team and the military have left with the last Dutch flight."

Obama wanted to be even more involved in Afghanistan, pile on a much larger occupying force and properly eliminate groups that would be a threat on withdrawal, and properly put systems in place that would remain robust when they did finally leave Afghanistan.

Biden wanted minimal involvement and a full withdrawal ASAP.

In fact Biden is one of the main reasons Obama didn't get his way with increased presence.

So I don't think his personal position on Afghanistan is just trying to appeal to the right... his previous politics suggest that it's something he's been in support of for over a decade.

Which on the other hand also puts to bed the "it's because he's old and senile and making terrible errors" part of the argument - he held the same overall position when he was Veep, a spring chicken in his mid 60's.

Oh wow, the whole thing really is Biden's fault - for stopping Obama from keeping the situation reaching that point, for not vetoing Trump's stupid plan, and then to carry it out in the stupidest way possible...

I mean the WHOLE thing still goes back much further, to the late 70's and the Russian occupation at least, but tbh let's face it more or less forever. The west has been ****ing around in the Middle East since the Crusades .

To be fair, the Crusades helped rescue Spain from islamic rule ... so it could be argued they didn't go far enough

This gets complicated though - Christianity was no less strict or brutal than Islam at the time (actually it was probably far worse)... and you could make an argument that the main reason Islam has failed to modernise fully across the world (modern/moderate Islam does exist, obviously) in the way other religions have is .. ... because the West have been constantly ****ing about with the Middle East forever.

Nah, it was never about the specifics of the religion, that's a red herring, all of the "holy books" are full of brutal bull****. The region would still have had the same issues, they'd just have issues with radical Christian extremists instead of Islamic ones. Same ghosts in the sky at the end of the day. The issue has always been how they're used to indoctrinate and control, and it doesn't really matter which book they use to do that. The people actually doing the indoctrinating don't believe a word of it anyway.
