1) It's not the same at all because flu vax are one-shot and thus easy to orchestrate (you show up, you get jabbed/sniff the thing, done) - multiple dose requirement makes it 10x more complicated to roll out, not 2x more complicated. People are flaky as **** and will fail to turn up at the right time for their repeat dose.

2) This year's flu vaccine roll out was *plagued* with organisational problems.

It was re-tested under different instructions and has yielded good results, 90+% efficacy and close to 100% in preventing severe illness. The latter figure of course matters for hospital strain, but is irrelevant for herd immunity (vaccinated people only getting it mild doesn't mean they can't pass it on just as easily).

I'm not sure if the others have released stats for preventing severe illness. It's comparable to the others that have been approved in terms of overall efficacy.

In terms of reliability of results, I'd actually be much more inclined to trust the Oxford vaccine over Pfizer or Moderna, purely because they have been much more transparent in showing their test results. You can look them up in quite significant detail. The others have released figures but have not "shown the working" to the same degree, to use school marking terms.

i fully expect the pfizer and moderna vaccines efficacy levels to drop significantly as more get vaccinated. If the Oxford vaccine is indeed now over 90% then it makes it a different proposition as it is much less of a stress to the body. Also, the new anti body injections that will be given to those that have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive will be a game changer in lieu of vaccination

Personally I expect, longer term (as I don't think we're driving Covid to zero, frankly) all of the real permanent gamechangers will come in the form of therapeutic advances that will mean it'll simply be less of a big deal to get Covid and deaths will be a tiny number of already very sick people. There are quite a number of illnesses like that still around today - death sentences 150 years ago... a 10 day prescription and bed rest today.

I thought it was just as serious/deadly BUT 70% more virulent/ easier to contract ??

They have to and will (or should) provide an information sheet (a photocopy most likely) with the details and any side effect information you need to know. The same little sheet that comes in any prescription medication and even over-the-counter stuff like paracetamol. You're supposed to get 10 minutes to read it over before you get a vaccine administered, whether or not that happens will likely vary from place to place, but if they don't give that sheet (and time to read it) then anyone who suffers an adverse reaction will have strong grounds to take legal action. Giving the reading material and a chance to read it means that the person administering the drug can show that there was "informed consent" (that the person getting the jab was aware of any risks and chose to go ahead) and that covers a lot of legal stuff.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has urged the government to concentrate on giving more people a single dose of the coronavirus vaccine, rather than ‘holding back’ stocks for a second jab. Both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccines require two doses to be fully effective. The government has ordered 100 million doses of the Oxford vaccine and 40 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Mr Blair suggested the roll-out should be ‘radically accelerated’ by giving the first jab to as many people as possible, instead of the current policy which sees half as many people get both doses. Setting out his call for a new approach yesterday, Mr Blair said ‘the reality is we are now in severe lockdown until vaccination’ and so it should be a priority to give as many people as possible some protection.

Tony Blair should shut up. There are lots of good reasons for giving everyone 2 jabs. The vulnerable are still vulnerable until 1 week after they get their 2nd shot. They are first on the list and they are the people with the highest risk of hospitalisation. In 2 weeks, many of them will be protected. If they only got 1 shot, they would probably still be at risk until the summer

Yeah the radio just mentioned that some hospitals are treating people in ambulances as there’s simply no room for them .... all this going on and they still want schools to reopen as usual ..

I fear that tomorrow’s new infections number will be approaching 50,000 !!

I don’t see that schools can open apart from MAYBE key worker kids like last time ...
