I dont think it has anything to do with him been worried about Helen at all, he has on a few occasions been more than happy to put her in her place.
It is more that he was trying to wriggle out of backstabbing his so called friend by backstabbing the other PH's that is why he didnt want to explain it in front of the others.

Chris just sits there and says it is what it is but the fairy godmother wants to be loved so he immediately pushes the love me button and gets a hate response.
